Chapter 144

"It doesn't hurt that much." Jake was clearly lying. He winced as Maleah pressed the bag of peas to his face.

Before anyone was able to stop Kerim he had grabbed Jake by the scruff of his neck and punched him in the eye.

The man had iron fists in Jake's opinion.

"Maybe you should have held off on telling uncle Kerim while you looked like Jake had fucked the daylights out of you all afternoon. Just a thought." Ava giggled on the other side of the kitchen island.

Mitch had taken Laney upstairs to her room while Dom and Juliet had taken care of pulling Kerim off of Jake. Katherine had gone up after getting some cookies and milk for her.

Maleah, Ava and Jake went to the kitchen straightaway to put something on his face before it could start swelling.

"I thought he would have been happy for me and I was too excited to think about it fully."

"Congratulations by the way."

"Thanks." Even after it had been nearly an hour since she had said yes, she didn't regret it. It filled her with unimagined glee to marry Jake.

It might feel rushed but it felt right.

Huh. She somehow felt like she was in Linc's shoes. Maybe that's the way he had felt and that's the reason why he had done the things the way he had.

She felt a little guilt for being a bitch. Only slightly though.

"You're not regretting it are you?" Jake asked her when he saw the strange expression on her face.

She shook her head. "No. Not at all."

"Didn't uncle Kerim also blow a fuse when you told him you were dating Linc and hit him?" Ava asked.

"Actually Linc tried to run away, tripped over the chair and hit his own face."

"At least I didn't run like a coward. I was brave and took the hit." Jake stuck out his chest very proudly.

Ava laughed. "You took the hit alright but you shrieked like a little girl. Laney's screams sound more manly."

Maleah snorted. Yeah he had cried out in surprise but no one had really been paying attention. Then again her father was pretty scary, a small shriek was deserved.

"I did not." Jake frowned.

"Whatever you say dude. We know who's going to be the man in this relationship." Ava teased.

"Shouldn't you be somewhere else packing?" Maleah gave her a look. "You leave in a few days."

"I'm going." Ava rolled her eyes. "A word with you please."

Maleah arched a brow but followed her out of the kitchen.

Ava stopped near the stairs. She didn't know how to broach this subject delicately without her cousin going up in anger.

"So...I meant my congratulations about you and Jake getting engaged. It's a surprise considering that you haven't spoken to him in months and the whole Linc, you must love Jake. I don't doubt it because I kind of already knew you think it's the right moment to do this?"

"Are you asking me if I only said yes because of Linc?"

"In part. You said yes because you do want to marry Jake. The question is...are you over Linc? This morning when you announced to the whole family that he and Charlie are having a baby it was kind of heartfelt, the pain in your voice. I think you should think about it. Think of if you are ready to move into something like this, suddenly."

Maleah understood what Ava was asking. She was concerned over her. "Yes, I still love Linc. He's...he was a big part of my life. I can't just get over it but I love Jake. I don't understand how that's possible but it's the way I feel. I believe that with him I will be happy, I know I will and Linc is the past. I have to move on."

"Don't feel like you need to rush anything because of what's happened. Take your time or not, I don't know. I'm not in this situation. It's just my opinion. I don't want you to get hurt. I hate it when you cry because I know you hate it. You're stronger than anyone I have ever met but I know that no one is invincible."

"Thanks, I'll think about what you said. I know you're saying it from the bottom of your heart and because you care."

"Of course I do. You're my partner."

Maleah laughed. "God, I can't believe uncle Daniel made us partners. Got to admit you were always right."

Ava grinned. "I always knew. Now, be happy and wait to get married until I'm back. I am not missing that."

"I'll wait for you to be back, promise."

"I'm going to give you a hug now." Ava wrapped her arms around her, she was pat in the back in turn. "I'm going to miss you. Don't catch too many bad guys without me."

They let go.

"Well, I'm going to go finish packing and I'll see you later or tomorrow."

"Go take care of your man. He's a good guy. He was right on being brave enough to face uncle Kerim's fist. I'll never forget the noise he made though and I will always tease him about it."

"I know you will." Maleah walked away as Ava started up the stairs.

Jake was still where they had left him.

"Hey. Do you feel better?"

"A little bit. So..."

"So..." She smiled.

"We're doesn't necessarily mean that we'll marry today, tomorrow, next week. I understand that it can be a few months maybe a year or two. I really hope not but it's up to you. Hell, I'd marry you this instant if it were possible. I just get that there are a few things you need to get over."

"I know we're not going to take a year to get married. That's too long for me but not today or next week. I promised Ava that I wouldn't do it while she's gone. I love you and I want to be with you, I don't want to take things too slow though."

He was smiling like a fool.

"You said you love me. I feel like it's a big deal when it's coming from you."

"Do you want me to give you a second black eye?"

"There's the woman I fell in love with. The one that doesn't say cutesy things and beats the hell out of me." He chuckled. "I have one request."

"Move in with me. Actually we'll get another place, somewhere we can live together and stay in after we're married. The apartment I'm in is quite small."

"Are you serious?"

"Do you not like the idea?"

"I do, just...I don't know. I saw you today for the first time in months, you've asked me to marry you and I've said yes, now you want to move in together. It's a lot in the space of less than 24 hours."

"I liked living with you. We made it work in canada. Things are different obviously because we'll be sharing one room but I do want to wake up with you by my side. I want to come home to you. I know you won't be cooking dinner as much and I'll be helping but I don't want to be without you much longer." He came around to her side.

He moved the hair away from her face in a gentle motion.

"What do you think?"

She leaned into his hand and looked into his eyes. "I say yes again. Let's move in together."

He lowered his head and kissed her.

"You need to calm the fuck down." Juliet glared at her husband.

"I am calm." He said in the most serene tone possible.

Dom knew that tone well. He was probably thinking of the different ways he could murder Jake. "Maleah needs him. She needs something good in her life and they look in love."

"You just saw the guy today. You don't know if he's in love with her or not." Kerim frowned.

"But our daughter is." Juliet ran a hand through his hair in a soothing motion. She was stuck to his side making sure he didn't go out to hurt her soon to be son in law. "I think this is good. It could help her forget Linc once and for all."

"I don't like him. He doesn't deserve her."

"No one deserves her. We expect the perfect guy but he doesn't exist. I say we let them get married, we won't interfere. Can you please act like a father and support her? She needs you to be there to walk her down the aisle. Remember what my father had to do for me even though he hated you."

That got him.

Lucifer still hated him after all these years but he stayed out of their marriage like a father should. Unless of course he would ever hurt Juliet physically which had never and would never happen.

He couldn't believe that he was now in his father in law's position. He was going to have to accept that Jake was going to marry Maleah.

"Thank you."

"I'm not doing it for you. I'm doing it for our daughter. I always told you that Linc was a bad idea."

She smiled. "Yeah well things happen. He fell in love with someone else as did she. I can see how much Jake loves her, the kind of love that Linc couldn't feel for her. I saw it all morning at the party. Didn't you?"

Kerim's jaw set. Yes, he saw it and he kept denying that it was real.

She kissed him on the cheek. "I'm tired and we should go upstairs to our room. Leave Jake alone please. The poor guy has to live with knowing that you can beat him to a pulp for the rest of his life. I'm sure that's enough to keep him in line and from hurting our daughter."

"I do like it that he's afraid of me."

Dom chuckled. "Poor kid. He doesn't know who he's messing with."

"At least I scare someone. James and Mitch aren't afraid of you."

"There is no need to be afraid of me. I'm fine with them as long as they treat my daughters like the queens they are, they do it already. What more could I ask for?" He shook his head and opened the office door. "I'll see you in the morning. Hope you can sleep well knowing that Jake's staying the night."

Kerim shot back. "Hope you know they will be doing the same thing Ava and Mitch have been doing most nights. Probably at this moment too."

Juliet interwined her fingers with Kerim and they walked out of the room after Dom. "We're no strangers to that."

"Please don't encourage his words."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

Together they walked up to their room.
