Chapter 145

Ava was jetlagged. She was tired and nervous about meeting Mitch's mother.

She sounded nice, at least from what she got from him but still. Sons will always have something good to say about their mothers.

"We'll be staying here instead of my mother's place because I want you to be comfortable." Mitch said as he opened the door to the hotel room they would be staying in. "Also her home is too small to take all three of us in."

"That's fine with me. What time are we going to see her?"

"In a few hours. I was thinking that we take a nap in the meantime."

"I completely agree."

Laney had fallen asleep in the cab on the way to the hotel. Mitch gently placed her on the second bed and covered her with the blanket she had brought.

Ava jumped on their bed and patted the side beside her. He grinned and laid next to her. They cuddled together.

"I hope your mother likes me."

"She'll adore you like I do. Especially Laney, she loves children."

"Is she going to want grandchildren soon? I was thinking of focusing on my career for a couple of years."

He agreed. "I don't want other children other than Laney at the moment. Perhaps when she's around five."

She hugged him tight and breathed deeply. "Sounds perfect..." Her voice lowered and she fell asleep.

He closed his eyes and smiled as he too went to sleep.

They woke up a few hours later and got ready to go have dinner with his mother.

Ava got into something modest yet not too much cause she wanted to be herself at the same time. She got Laney into a dress and they were ready.

A cab took them to his mother's place.

It looked like a somewhat house but it seemed to have other tenants.

They went inside and he knocked a door on the second floor.

Ophelia was a beautiful woman that looked young despite her age. She said some loving words in french to her son. She hadn't seen him in over a year. He called every week though.

"This is Ava and Laney." Mitch introduced them.

"Ah, lovely girl." Ophelia gave Ava a hug. "Cutie as well. I can imagine what other children you two will be making."

Ava turned red and gave him an 'I told you' look with a smile.

"That's still in a while mama." He chuckled.

"It's fine with me. You have this doll to look after." She patted Laney's head. "Come into the kitchen, I have dinner ready."

Her kitchen was technically in the same room as the living room. They only walked a few feet to the cozy place.

"I made a special dessert for Laney. Mitchel told me how much she loves crepes."

"She does ever since he gave her one to try. He makes them most of the time." Ava told her.

"That's my son. I taught him how much a woman is cared for. We are fragile creatures compared to men and more sentimental. I say he must treat the woman he loves like she is the only one in the world."

"He certainly treats me well."

"Good. I expect nothing less from him." His mother smiled at him.

They all helped set the table. Ava was excited for the french cuisine. The food looked delicious.

They sat down around the table and said grace first. His mother was religious and she respected that.

"Mitchel told me that you are a police officer now." Ophelia started.

"I am. I'll be working as soon as we get back."

"I'm glad that you're a hard working woman. I admire that. My son may not be rich but I know he would have been fine had you not wanted to work. I want what is best for him and not a woman that does nothing."

Ava laughed. "I'm certainly not that person anymore. I was before but a lot has changed and he's been a part of that."

"I love her the way she is. Had she been the kind of woman to stay home I would have accepted that like you said."

"I hope that you enjoy your time here. Tomorrow I understand that Mitchel has planned it as a special day. I will be taking care of Laney if that's alright with you."

"Oh, I had no idea." Ava looked questionally at him. "You didn't tell me you had a big plan."

He cleared his throat. "It's just something I thought to do. Show you around where I grew up and go to the eiffel tower together."

"I would love that. I think I told you that I went before but it didn't hold that special thing for me that I was looking for. With you I think I'll feel almost as much love for it as my parents did." She turned to Ophelia. "My father asked my mother to marry her there."

"That's very romantic."

"I imagine it was. Anyway, I will be looking forward to tomorrow."

"I hope it turns out to be a day you remember." Ophelia gave her a warm smile.

Ava liked her a lot. She was nice and now she understood how Mitch turned out the way he was. Thanks to his mother.

They finished up with dinner and dessert. Ophelia made some coffee and they talked well into the night. Laney had fallen asleep on the couch and in the end they decided to stay.

Ophelia insisted they sleep on her bed but Ava and Mitch refused. They were going to wake up early anyway to go back to the hotel and change for the day.

In the darkness of the living room they snuggled on the floor with covers and pillows.

"How special is tomorrow?"

"Very I hope."

She could imagine his smile even if she couldn't see it. "I like your mom."

"That makes me very happy."

"I hope she can handle Laney."

"She will. She raised me."

She giggled. "That's what concerns me." She joked.

"Get some sleep. We have a long day tomorrow."

They got ready back in the hotel and were at Ophelia's home an hour after they had left.

"You two have fun and take lots of pictures." She waved at them from the door.

"We will. See you in a few hours mom." Mitch took Ava's hand and led her down the stairs.

The tour started with them walking around.

Originally his mother did not live there. She had moved after he had left Paris to go to the U.S. Before that he showed her where he had grown up.

It was a small apartment complex near by.

"My mother had what you would call a one night stand with my father. When she found out she was pregnant she already knew that he had moved back home. All she had was a number and his name."

"Did she contact him?"

"No. She knew he was a party boy or a guy that didn't really want any responsabilities. He was only 18 you know. She was the same age and she knew what it was like to not want a big change in her life. She decided to have me anyway and says that she regrets nothing."

"Adam is a nice guy."

"I know. I met him and spent some time getting to know him. He said that he didn't know how he would have reacted had she contacted him. Personally I'm fine with how things turned out. My mother raised me right and I got to meet my father. She gave me the information and I did the rest after I was of age. Thanks to that I met you."

"You are too cheesy."

He laughed. "That's just me."

He showed her where he went to school and the few friends he had from then. He had let them know that he was coming to visit.

They all told him he was lucky for a girl like Ava. In reality she was the lucky one. It was a short brunch thing and then they were off with the tour.

She liked the sights and the history that he provided for some.

She was most excited about the eiffel tower.

It was quite the trek and adventure to get to the top but it was worth it.

Before she hadn't really enjoyed it but standing there at that was everything her mother had made it sound.

Mitch, her love, was there sharing the moment with her. Other couples and tourists were as well but she ignored them. It was as if the two of them were the only ones there.

"How do you feel?" He kissed her forehead.

"I love it. I love you."

"I love you too."

"I can't believe my parents were here years ago. I'm getting to experience a part of what they did."

He lifted his hand and touched her cheek lightly with the pads of his fingers. "It doesn't have to only be a part."

"What do you mean?"

"I spoke to your father and I told him what my intentions with you are. He agreed that this would be special and you deserved it." He stepped back and held her hands. "You deserve everything in the world to be happy and I thought that this would be the perfect place because of what it means to your family, a beginning. It should be a beginning for us as well."

She swallowed nervously. A small part of her was telling her what might happen next. Another told her not to wish for too much.

Then he got down on one knee and she knew what part to believe.

"I'm hoping for a lot and that you'll say yes to what I'm about to ask." He looked nervous himself as he let go of one hand and took out the ring from his pocket. "I love you and I want to share the rest of my life with you. I don't care about the past, it doesn't matter who you were then. I've gotten to know you and I love every part of you. Even the wild and crazy woman that you are sometimes. Ava...will you marry me?"

She laughed. She was a crazy bitch sometimes. "Yes, I'll marry you." She watched as he put the ring on her finger and he stood up.

They hugged and kissed.

This day had been special indeed.
