Grandad Slugshaw’s Recycling Bin

Thirty-six empty beer cans

Carlsberg special brew

Each flat as a pancake

Squashed with his shoe

An empty pop bottle

Missing its lid

Theakston’s old peculiar

Three for five quid

Tesco’s basic bitter

Five bob a tin

It’s

In Grandad Slugshaw’s recycling bin

A cornflakes box

Asda’s own brand

Three empty bean cans

A pilchard tin, and

A tin that he bought

With no label – hence

It was worth the gamble

For only five pence

When the tin got home

It had cat food within

Now it’s

In Grandad Slugshaw’s recycling bin

A strip of tin foil

A marmalade jar

A week’s worth of reading

The Sun, and The Star

An old copy of playboy

With the pages well worn

The randy old bugger

He likes his soft porn

Jameson whiskey

Gordons dry gin

Now it’s

In Grandad slugshaw’s recycling bin

An unopened letter

In Grandma’s own hand

Just why she left him

He can’t understand

But leave him she did

Now he wants a clean break

Not words on a page

To explain his mistake

How she’d left him for Charlie

They’re living in sin

It’s

In Grandad Slushaw’s recycling bin
