Preface

It is almost if not completely certain to say that grammatical categories are the most undermined aspects of syntax of any language, in our case, English. However, they are the most important indispensable tools in the hands of whoever wishes to excel in Use of English – written or spoken. This is because sentences have structures that are not just strings of words which occur in a random order. Words – the constituents of sentences – do not just follow each other like the beads on a string or the carriages on a train; rather, they must be connected structurally and grammatically falling into their right slots as the syntax of the language specifies.

A sentence such as The Matrons would all want the girls to dress themselves can be analysed thus: the clause the Matrons will all want the girls to dress themselves is a statement. The phrase the Matrons is a noun phrase and the direct object of the verb want; while the phrase the girls is a noun phrase and the subject of the infinitive verb dress. The phrase the Matrons is a noun phrase and the subject of the verb want; while the phrase themselves is a noun phrase and the direct object of the verb dress. The phrase to dress themselves is an infinitive complement of the verb want. The word all is a floating quantifier specifying the noun Matrons; while the word girls is a plural count noun and is also the head of the noun phrase the girls. The word dress is an infinitive form of the verb; while the word Matrons is a plural count noun and is also the head of the noun phrase the Matrons. The first word the is a determiner specifying the noun Matrons while the second the is a determiner specifying the noun girls. The word themselves is a reflexive pronoun. The word to is the marker for the infinitive; while the word want is the main verb of the Matrons will all want the girls to dress themselves. The word will is a modal auxiliary specifying the meaning of the verb want.

The words of a sentence are strictly organised – there is an underlying pattern. For instance, a sentence like: the pig killed a rabbit and chewed it shows that the goes with pig rather than with killed and it is more closely associated with chewed than with and, killed or rabbit. The combinatorial rule for achieving this is the major thrust of this introductory book. Written by one of the finest voices in Creative Writing and Morpho-syntax – Terfa Meshach, the book aptly captures the critical grammatical categories necessary for attaining competence and performance in communication and use of English.
