Leo.

Look at me and what do you see? A cat! Unremarkable, like thousands of others, maybe. But look again. Closely now......do you see it? My shadow? I might be a cat but my shadow is that of a lion!

Jane, my human, she saw it straight away, even when I was still no more than a tiny kitten. That’s why she gave me that name. Her star-sign she said, but I knew that she’d noticed that shadow of mine. She knew I was going to be king of the concrete jungle in which we live.

And that’s just what I feel like as I sit high up on the top step. There have been moments when my position has been challenged. There have been upstarts and usurpers who have tried to remove me from my throne, but Jane is my army, the only one I need. At the slightest sign of conflict she rushes to my side, ready to serve and protect her king.

I could hunt like a lion if I wanted to. There are plenty of lesser creatures around. I could lay in wait, lazily watching and then.....pounce! Or even better, just stretch out a paw and capture my prey by a tail.

I am as brave as a lion too. Those metal monsters go rushing down the street, this way and that, roaring at the top of their lungs. But I do not flinch from them. I know in my heart that my lion’s roar would stop them dead in their tracks, drown them all out, should I ever choose to use it.

But really I am quite content. I have the best food, the warmest bed and the most loving populace ever. Jane adores me, looks after me, sees to my every desire. She sees my lion shadow and respects it. She knows I am her king and what more could any royalty want!
