Created for my intro to film class, Trapped is a short script about two best friends on campus that get stuck in an elevator on their way to class. Secrets and harbored feelings finally come out! It does not heavily focus on same sex relationships purely because I did not know how my professor was going to deal with that but I did want to take it in that direction.

Do note I don't actually know the right format for scripts nor did my class teach me but this got a passing grade nonetheless :D

CHARACTERS

Jeremy- A 19 year old whose life is been rather normal and mundane. He looks like your average college male. He dislikes going to school because he doesn’t know why he is going. He has been best friends with David since they met in middle school. David visits nearly every week and doesn’t question it and assumes it’s out of friendship.

David - A rather shy 18 year old whose life has been worse than others. His father often beats him for anything and everything. He has known Jeremy since middle school and shows up at Jeremy’s place on Friday and stays til Monday where they both go to school together. He has never told Jeremy about his father’s abuse.

STUDENT 1 - Student that enters the Student Resource Center

LADIES 1 AND 2 - In an elevator and get off

TECHNICIAN - SCC Crew

EXT. SAC CITY COLLEGE - DAY

A montage of students eating, lounging, laughing, crying around SCC with birds chirping in the background.

JEREMY rides his bike through the quad to a bike rack. Cell phone RINGS and JEREMY answers

JEREMY

Hello? (Pause) Yeah I’m here, I’ll be over there in a few minutes to whoop some-

A faculty member walks by him and looks at him

JEREMY

Nothing, I will not be whooping anything today.

He quickly hangs up out of embarrassment and walks away

CUT TO:

INT. STUDENT RESOURCE CENTER - DAY

JEREMY walks in through a set of doors and looks around the room for a few seconds before heading off towards a table with DAVID slightly slouching with a trading card game deck in front of him. He is staring at JEREMY with a straight face. JEREMY notices DAVID slouching but dismisses it.

2.

DAVID

(Asian Accent)

Ohhh, hello young grasshopper. Have you come to be defeated yet again?!

JEREMY

(Sits down with an annoyed face)

...Dude shut up. Anyway, let’s just play before we have to get to class. We’ve got about uhh... half an hour.

DAVID

Ohh god, please stop reminding me man. I hate going to that class. Professor Huey is such a bore!

JEREMY

(While setting up deck) Dear lord, I would trade in a

finger to not go to that class. Its so crappy that attendance is mandatory.

A group of students enter the room and announce an event

STUDENT 1

Can I have your attention please? We are having a free concert right outside in

DAVID

Ohh look another thing I’m not interested in.

JEREMY

Yeah same here man. Actually on second thought let’s hit up the store real quick. I need to get some supplies for the class.

DAVID

Well then what the hell was the point of you setting up everything?

JEREMY

I’ll buy you a drink.

DAVID

SAY NO MORE!

The duo start walking out of the room and make their way towards the store

3.

JEREMY

Anything interesting happen to you over the weekend?

DAVID

Actually yes, something quite interesting happened over the weekend. It .... I don’t know

JEREMY

Well...what is it?

DAVID

I... uhh... I did Professor Huey’s homework!

JEREMY

UHH OH THE WORLD IS GOING TO END!

DAVID DOING HIS HOMEWORK?! HOLY

JESUS THAT’S IT! IT’S TIME TO SIN

LIKE THERE’S NO TOMORROW BECAUSE

THERE WON’T BE!

DAVID

(Punches Jeremy on the arm) Yeah, real funny douche.

JEREMY

Ohh.. you thought I was joking?

The duo arrive at the store

INT. STUDENT STORE - DAY

They walk around the store a few times casually. Occasionally they pick up a few items and joke about them. Eventually they exit the store and walk towards the PAC

DAVID

What are you planning on doing later this week?

JEREMY

Well knowing you, probably gonna see you knocking on my door Friday. Again. Then staying over for 3 days. Again.

DAVID

...Sorry, If you didn’t like me coming over so much you could’ve told me. I guess it just kinda became a normal thing with me.

4.

JEREMY

Nah just messing with ya. I love having you over. Beats being home with nothing to do.

INT. PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - DAY

The duo enter the PAC and proceed to wait in front of the elevator. They press the button and they hear the elevator come down. It makes loud rickety noises. As if maintenance hasn’t checked up on it in a while. The duo look at each other.

DAVID

If that isn’t a sign that we shouldn’t go to class. I don’t know what is.

JEREMY

I told you didn’t I? You did the homework and now the world is going to end. Armageddon is coming because of you.

DAVID

Well if it means I get to skip class then I’m all for it.

DAVID smiles and looks at JEREMY and JEREMY smiles back. The elevator arrives and two ladies exit

LADY 1

Boy that elevator gets more and more rickety every time I get in it.

LADY 2

You’d think they’d give a damn about their own elevator but whatevers. Aint nothing better happen to me when I’m up in there.

INT. ELEVATOR - DAY

The duo shrug and get into the elevator and press the second button. As the elevator goes up it suddenly stops mid way. The duo wait patiently.

JEREMY

Wow....this is taking.. longer than usual.

5.

DAVID (Clearly agitated)

Elevator is old, what do you expect?

They wait for a few more seconds. Eventually it turns into a few minutes.

JEREMY

Well, would ya look at that. We didn’t want to go to class and now we might not have to.

DAVID

Umm well I kind of need to go to class. It’s...important

DAVID presses the help button and waits for a response, no one on the other end picks up. He presses the open doors button and nothing happens.

JEREMY

Dude, we bitch about how much we don’t want to go and when the opportunity shows you don’t take it. Come on! Relax a little

JEREMY pats DAVID on the back. DAVID yelps in response. JEREMY stares in disbelief

JEREMY

Dude I barely touched you. Are you okay?

Sweat rolls down DAVID’s face

DAVID (Stressed)

Yeah! Everything’s good. You just... caught me by surprise.

JEREMY clearly not believing it.

JEREMY

Right, right. Well anyway, try those buttons again and then we’ll call 911.

DAVID although cautious assumes JEREMY believed him and slightly turns his back against him and resumes pushing buttons. JEREMY takes this as an opportunity and quickly presses his hands against DAVID’s back. DAVID yelps and turns around and accidentally slams his back against the

wall and falls to the ground face first. He is crying. As he is on the ground his shirt has rolled up a little and JEREMY can see the bruises on DAVID’s back.

JEREMY (Freaking out)

OH SHIT DUDE! I’M SORRY!

JEREMY gently grabs DAVID and props him against the wall. JEREMY sits down next to DAVID and lifts up his shirt half way to reveal bruises on his entire torso. DAVID does not resist. Only the sounds of crying can be heard.

JEREMY (Hesitant but stern)

Tell me. How did you get all those bruises.

Silence can only be heard. DAVID rests his head on JEREMY’s shoulder.

DAVID

(Crying starts dying down) I don’t want to talk about it.

JEREMY

You don’t have a choice anymore.

DAVID’s crying has stopped. He hesitates when he answers.

DAVID

You know how I come over every weekend?

JEREMY (Sarcastically)

No.

JEREMY’s response elicits a soft laugh from the both of them.

DAVID

I guess you have a right to know everything.

DAVID pauses.

DAVID

My dad... regularly beats me. Ever since my mom died he started drinking heavily.

7.

JEREMY

Why didn’t you tell anyone? Why didn’t you tell me?!

JEREMY starts getting angry. DAVID starts crying again. JEREMY calms down at the sight of this and puts his arm around DAVID. Eventually DAVID calms down again.

DAVID

I don’t know. When I think about it, I guess it’s because of two reasons. I kept believing he’ll change but it’s been years now. I also needed a place to stay and live in til I was done with high school. I’ve been looking for a job for a while.

JEREMY

All those times. I can’t believe all those times I’ve seen you slouching or walking slower than usual you’ve been beaten. You know what. When we get out of here we’re going to the police.

DAVID

No, just leave him be. Once I move out things will be fine and he’ll just be on his own and whatever happens, happens.

JEREMY

Are... you serious? After all that shit you want to just let him go?

DAVID

He’s already like this and there’s no hope for change. His life is already fucked beyond saving. I just don’t want to deal with it.

JEREMY

That’s fine. I’ll deal with it.

DAVID

No, just.. leave it alone. Things will resolve itself. It’s not like it’s all bad. I got to spend every weekend hanging out with you and getting away from everything. I’m so thankful to know you. I don’t know if I could have kept going if you weren’t there for me.

8.

JEREMY

But I never knew about it. I didn’t do anything for you. If I had known I could’ve helped you somehow! I don’t know how but I would’ve done something. I’m sorry. I wish I could’ve been a better friend. I wish I recognized the signs and that something was off. I just assumed you were tired all those times.

DAVID

Well now you do. As soon as I get money I can move out and do my own thing.

Silence occurs for a few seconds.

JEREMY

I got an even better idea. Why don’t you just move in with me?

DAVID

Really? No, I couldn’t do that to you. I don’t have a way to pay you for food and things.

JEREMY

Did I say you had to pay? It wouldn’t affect me all to much. Other than the fact there’d be one more person in my personal space.

DAVID laughs gently.

DAVID

Are you sure? I really don’t want to bother you more.

JEREMY

Dude I see you everyday, it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. As soon as we get out of here and finish class, depending, we’re getting your stuff and moving it to my place.

Silence fills the elevator and is eventually broken by DAVID laughing.

9.

JEREMY

What’s so funny?

DAVID

This situation we’re in. How we didn’t want to go to class and our wish was granted.

JEREMY laughs

JEREMY

Yeah it is pretty ridiculous.

DAVID

You know, I’m glad I told you. I feel a lot better knowing you know. Now, I can get away from him too.

DAVID looks at JEREMY and smiles and JEREMY smiles back. They look at each other and their heads begin to lean in. The door suddenly opens and a technician is standing there.

TECHNICIAN

You boys alright? I heard the elevator wasn’t working but I didn’t expect anyone to be in it.

DAVID (Smiling)

Better than ever.

JEREMY (Also smiling)

Hey, you wouldn’t mind telling our professor we were stuck in an elevator would you?

TECHNICIAN (Laughs)

Alright, I just need to make sure things are working and we’ll get to your professor.

The duo smile at each other and wait patiently as the technician goes to work.

Camera fades out.
