Can’t Get Through

I should have known better, or at least been a bit suspicious. A healthy bit of scepticism would have saved a lot of trouble. But no, not me! You looked so respectable, standing there in your suit and tie, that flashy new car parked nearby. And you were pleasant, not at all pushy......still, I should have known.

And there was the timing, too. My washing machine was out of order, hadn’t worked for a few weeks. I was going to get it fixed, just hadn’t got round to it. The offer of a modern, up-to-date machine for not much more than I’d have paid for repairs, well that was too good an offer to refuse.

The van that delivered it wasn’t so flashy though, was it. And the two that brought it in; let’s say that they were not too helpful. First of all, they didn’t connect it up; and then they left the old one, in spite of your promise that it would be taken away. I might have had niggles then but no fully-formed doubts.

Okay, so I’m not that good at jobs around the house but I can attach pipes together. I got the new machine in place, plumbed it in, and struggled to manoeuvre the old machine out to the back garden. I’d get my brother to take it for recycling when I saw him next. It’s not like I spent a lot of time out there anyway.

No manual, that’s the first thing I notice. And with all these different settings to work out it’s not going to be easy. A digital read-out here, and a number punched in there; laundry in and we’re ready to go. I press the switch and.....nothing! Not a light to be seen or a sound to be heard. Obviously I’ve done something wrong with the settings.

Half an hour later, and numerous attempts, finally reward me with a movement, a sound, and yes, the laundry washing is under way. Then five minutes later it stops so back I am, fiddling away with buttons and numbers until eventually it restarts. And this time it goes all the way through the cycle. Well, okay! I’ve finally got it sorted.

The next time I used it, it would not stop! After two hours I gave in and switched off the plug. There was nothing wrong with the settings; they clearly pointed to the fact that the cycle had been long over. Of course I was left with a drum that was almost impossible to open and was still full of water. Not to mention soaking washing to try to dry.

I tried to phone you the following day but all I got was your answering machine. I left a message but you didn’t call back.

The next time it would not start at all, and the time after that the washing cycle worked, the machine stopped, but the pump had not come on and my floor was flooded. Needless to say, I was not amused at all. After mopping and sponging the water up, I phoned the number on your card again.....and got your answering machine. This time I was not quite so polite in asking you to ring me back.

Did you ring me? Not a chance. Day after day I have waited for you to return my call; day after day I have tried to phone you. There is no address, no other contact details, I want to complain but I can’t get through to you. Only your answering machine, and that does not care. And now I can’t even afford to get the old one fixed!
