The freezing wind whipped at her skin.

What had she been thinking, venturing out like that in the middle of the night?

She bit the inside of her cheek harder.

The forest had been denser than expected. The snow, thicker than anticipated.

It had taken no less than twenty minutes to get lost.

With every passing minute, the trail left behind by her boots disappeared, more and more.

It wasn’t too late, she could still turn around; get back to the warm place which her family called home.

Would it be considered defeat?

Would that make her weak?

In the house which couldn’t make her feel at home.

The numbness had already taken hold of her feet and her legs were the victim of icy pinpricks.

She fell in the snow.  A layer of flakes floated around her. She turned her body around and looked at the magic created by the snowflakes intertwining with the starry sky.

The coldness of the night lost itself in the blissful silence.

Maybe she should just sleep, she thought.

In a far distance, a mother cries and a father wonders what he’s done wrong.

Things are never as it seems at home.

They wait for the phone to ring. For someone to tell them that they’ve found their light. The warmth, the one person that unites them and makes it possible for these two people to be called a family.
