The soft and gentle sun thawed my tattered soul. The large oak tree in the park had been the perfect place for a nap. It had been the perfect place to hide. My face was hot with tears, my head thumped with fear.

He hadn’t even bothered asking for my name.

I was silly.

Stupid.

He’d taken one look at me, head to toe and hadn’t even bothered to answer.

He could have at least acknowledged me!

Did he not realize how much courage I had to gather to be able to ask him out for a drink?

A toxic grip clutched at my heart. Tears welled in my eyes. A ball formed in my throat. And then it hit me, in the form of a warm wave. I sobbed, head between my knees, quietly. The gaze of people passing by served as a reminder that I was weak.

I wonder, could this situation have turned out differently? What could I have changed, which would have at least earned me some consideration?

My arms and legs wilted. All my energy was pouring out my eyes. I was sinking into the ground. The air around me was turning thin.

To everyone else, this was a perfect summer day. The sun was high in the sky, not a cloud in sight.

But to me, I would remember this day, as the day my heart broke into a million little pieces
