It had been unexpected. When Laura came back home she was met with a heavy sensation of nothingness. Thinking it was simply due to the lack of lighting she proceeded to flick the light switch on. The light flooded the room.

Nothingness again, the feeling was crushing. Had her apartment always felt that way? She looked around the room. Everything was where it should be. She had been living on her own for the past five years, yet this was the first time this particular feeling had dawned on her. She couldn’t quite place her finger on it. She reassessed her day. Everything had been normal at work. No family drama was in sight.

Laura sighed, got up, and plopped a frozen meal in the microwave.  She watched the clock’s count down.

“Ahh!” the sudden realization hit her. A flashback of her walking home submerged her. A couple hand in hand had walked on the sidewalk opposite to her. She signed, again.

The scolding hot food in front of her, a glass of white wine on her right, Laura distracted herself by playing a game on her phone.

For a brief moment, she considered a dating site, but then washed down the idea with a gulp of wine.

“I’ll get a dog.”

Laura smiled, the hollow feeling somehow floating away from her studio apartment.
