“Kelly, can I come to your house tomorrow?”

“Sure! What do you have in mind?”

“Nothing, maybe watch a movie or look at the new book you got.”

I was grateful. Karina was my closest friend. High-school had started out rather rough, but once I met Karina I’d finally been able to enjoy it. It felt like I’d known her all my life. Most of the time we would hang out in my room; talk about all the latest gossip or simply read beside each other. Sometimes we went on walks in the park. Karina loved being outside. I spent a lot of time with her, but we didn’t really talk that much; which was alright. Her company was more than enough for me.

I heard the doorbell ring and ran downstairs. She was right on time. I swung the door open and Karina jumped into my arms.

“Hi Kelly, what do you want to do today?”

“I’ll show you the book you wanted to read”

I felt a presence behind me. It was my mother. I turned around and was about to introduce her to Karina but she cut me off.

“Dear who are you talking to?” My mother asked perplexed, “There’s no one at the door.”

I turned to face my friend again, Karina’s eyes were locked on mine. She grinned and reached out for my hand. I took a step back.

I was too slow.

Karina’s fingers interlocked with mine.

“Right! I was just thinking about my best friend,” I smiled and waved at my mother, “I don’t want to be late. See you later mom!”

I walked out the door, hand in hand with my only friend.
