“Just hold onto my hand and trust me!”

I stared at the outstretched hand in front of me. My pulse accelerated. It wasn’t something hard to do. I just had to grab his hand. Right? But before I could bring myself to do it I felt a strong grip hold onto my hand.  A looked at him, confused. Wasn’t I supposed to decide?

“You know what! I’ll just have to prove it to you.”

I looked at him. I looked behind us. They were getting closer. Running towards us with baseball bats. How had I gotten myself into this?

He pulled me closer to the window ledge.

“Now we jump!”

A soft tug brought me closer to him. My mind clouded over. I could feel my feet walking closer to the open window.  My legs lifted one at a time over the ledge.

My head nodded yes and we fell from the second floor. It happened so fast. My mind was a blur.  My feet touched the ground and I spun around. I turned to face him as he let go my hand.

“Who are you?”

“No time for this yet, miss. I’m afraid we still need to run,” he said as he pointed to the window on the second floor of my school. I looked up and saw our pursuers, far from happy.

He patted the dirt off his coat and offered his hand. This time I grabbed it, without hesitation.
