The warm sun stirs my progeny from their sleep. They jump and bite at each other. The commotion awakens me. The hot season has just started. There are many things that I must still show them before we part ways. They’ve shown remarkable skills in gathering and stealth. The next lesson is one of migration. Our lair, hidden away from the white cold blanket is a few days walk away.  I wonder if they understand the dangers ahead of us. Incomprehensible sound emerges from their small bodies as they roll around in the dirt.

It’s alright, I’ll protect them till they are ready to travel on their own.

Keeping them on track proved to be harder than I expected. They want to play, to venture on their own. Small movements, twigs snapping, birds chirping startle them. I understand. I remember what it was like the first time I migrated.

The sun rises and drops a couple times on our journey.

If my senses serve me right we should be near, but things seem different. The forest feels different. There is a smell I don’t recognize. A buzzing I can’t place. The trees coverage above us diminishes. The sky becomes visible. Did I forget the path?

My foot rests on a stone I’ve never seen before. A large slab that spreads on till the horizon. What kind of river is this? Hesitantly I walk to the middle and look back. The small ones are scared, they hide in the tall grasses on the side.

Screeching behind me captures my attention. I turn as fast as I can and see a blinding light.

I hope I’ve taught my little ones enough.
