Equality

This will be a very short essay, inspired by a story I just heard on the UK news. It was in regard to schools, school uniform policy in particular.

The heat has been intense in many areas, the heatwave has been prolonged. The boys, teenagers, requested that they be allowed to wear shorts until the temperature went down a bit. The answer was no; shorts were not listed in permitted uniform so would not be acceptable.

So some clever lad read through the list and zeroed in on an alternative – a skirt! It was listed as permissible uniform and nowhere did it specify that this was just for girls. Now, fair play to him, he borrowed a skirt and together with a couple of his mates went to school wearing it. The following day – today, thirty of them did so!

Many schools let girls wear either skirts or trousers for uniform – could this be the beginning of a new trend?
