Chapter 1-The Gathering Darkness

Heinrich Ottoman stood over his dying wife, tears streaming down his face. She had been in intensive care for two weeks now.

The doctors had done all they could do. The last stroke she had had was, in truth, her Grim Reaper coming to take her away.

He backed away as the paddles were brought in and charges applied. The LED lifeline kept returning to it's flat and straight form. On the third attempt, all knew it was over.

A flash of lightening and thunder acted as an instant interlude.

The brilliant geophysicist had been married to his beautiful Greta for thirty two years. .

Heinrich could not watch as they pulled the covers over her head. He turned and watched the rain fall against the window, like the tears he shed. Greta's doctor gave Heinrich's arm a squeeze. "I'm sorry," he said softly.

On top of this, he had no idea how he was going to pay the hospital bills. He had no insurance and he was broke. There were no close relatives to help either.

Ray sat in his Lincoln Town Car ouside the mall and lit up a Cigarello. He had to work up the desire to face the nuthouse he was fixing to go into. It was Saturday, December 16.

His new found companion, April, had wanted some specific things she saw at Macy's. He didn't want to dissappoint her.

Ray hated Christmas shopping. It had turned insane in the past few years; the rudness from others. the long lines, the crowds, and the expense.

After a minute or two he put his Stetson on and got out of the car. He wanted to get some fresh air and to look up at the stars  before he went in.

He didn't mind looking like a cowboy in New York. There were all manner of individuals running around these days ; just take a walk in Central Park sometime.

Four well dressed men carrying attache cases entered one of the main entrances and made their way to the closest restroom. They each went into a stall and set their breifcases down on top of the toilet lids. One stayed by the door and watched as an elderly man wearing a Jets softball cap started to approach.

"Sorry, this is closed for now" the lookout said. The man just shook his head and turned away.

The three, now  wearing gloves, black ski masks, and carrying their assembled assault weapons and grenads in their pockets, shut the door and let the lookout get himslf ready. When he was finished, like the others, he sprayed his breifcase with Windex to clean off any fingerprints. They stacked the cases in a stall and made their way out the door and into the mall's mainstream.

Two got on one side and two got on the other. They began spraying the crowds with bullets and tossing grenades through the store's windows and doorways.

Ray took a final puff and ditched his cigar. He then exhaled big breath thinking "Well, here goes" and started walking  towards Macy's side entrance.

Suddenly he heard screams. "What the hell?" he thought.

Then he heard automatic gunfire. Grabbing his glove out of the side interior pocket of his sportcoat, he started running towards the entrance.

Then he heard an explosion.
