Chapter 11-A Twist of Fate

Mike heard the explosion, turned, and shot like a rocket out the window.

By now SWAT teams were repelling out of helicopters and crashing through windows. Other teams were battering down the ground floor doors and charging in. In a matter of seconds they had flooded the entire castle.

The family that was held hostage were all sitting down with blankets and drinks. The children and mother hugged one another as the father sat with his arms around  them.

News people tried to get to them but, by order of the task force commander, were held back.

After a while, one of the ranking FBI agents sat down next to the family and asked if he could question them. The father said he would be glad to answer.

The agent asked who had  rescued them and the father replied "I don't know. It all happened so fast. It had to be one of those superhero guys they talk about on TV every so often."

"Did you get a good look at them?" asked the agent.

"No," he replied, "it was dark and like I said everything moved really really fast."

Mike landed on the ground and desparately started searching for Ray. Suddnely he saw a glow out of the corner of his eye and ran towards it. It was Ray's glove. He was still wearing it.

Mike saw that Ray was lying on his stomach. He then turned him over.

The heavily wounded hero's whole torso, neck, and face were black. The part of his uniform covering that area had been blown off.

Swallowing hard, Mike pressed his ear against Ray's chest.

There was a heartbeat!

A glowing blanket of clear silverish light started spreading over all over him  Mike jumped back, startled.

The glove was working it's healing power.

Suddenly as well, the same thing started radiating out of Mike's glove, covering Ray.

Shouts and the sound of running footsteps started coming their way. Mike looked up and saw figures running towards them.

He gathered Ray in his arms and shot into the sky, leaving more bewildered people behind.

Heinrich lay in Lance's trailer on the bed, staring at the ceiling and contemplating what his next move should be.

He did not think it was a good idea to leave very quickly as it would look a little too suspicious when the investigation started concerning his disappearance.

It would probably be at least another week before it began. Or maybe longer.. and no telling when the car would be discovered. He lowered all the windows about a third of the way before he drove it into that lake. He surmised it would stay down there a long time.

Rehashing everything over in his mind once more, he knew this was the best course of action to save himself. Lance was always talking about how he had no close family left and basically no friends. Because of this, Heinrich knew he had nothing to worry about as far as the aspect of being discovered was concerned.

This also took care of his creditor problems.

Heinrich decided that he would give it about another two weeks and then leave. He found some documents with Lance's signature so it was no problem to cash any checks as it was easily duplicated.

Suddenly there was a knock at the door. He got up and looked through the small window. There were two well dressed men standing there.

"Holy Christ!"he thought to himself,"boy do these guys work fast!"

He gathered his composure and asked "May I help you?"

"My name is Robert Peterson and this is Harold Wasserman" one of the men said, gesturing to the other,"we're from the law offices of Baker, Baker, and Morrison. You are Mr Lance Buchanann,? " He showed Heinrich his business card.

"Remember?" Robert said,"you responded to our certified letter."

"Oh yes," Heinrich answered "now I remember." He opened the door and invited them in.

"May we see some identification?"asked Robert. Heinrich showed them Lance's  driver's license.

Heinrich bid them to sit down. Harold opened his briefcase and gave Heinrich the address and phone number to their office in Manhattan as well as the itenarary for the reading of the will. He breifly looked it over.

"The late Doctor Townsend's will shall be read according to this itenarary," Harold said. "You'll also see we have our address, phone number, and directions to the office in this document."

"As we explianed," Robert said,"Doctor Townsend became estranged from what little family he had some years ago. But he never forgot how you saved his life during the battle of The Tete Offensive in Viet Nam. And you know, that while on his death bed,he insisted you be found as he felt that he owed so much of his life to your courageous acts under such heavy fire and how you carried him such a long way to the helicopter."

Heinrich just silently nodded.

"Do you have any questions for us?" Robert asked

"No sir, I don't," Heinrich responded

"Please sign this document stating you have received what was presented to you and give it back to me," Harold said.

Heinrich complied. Then both men got up and extended their hands.

"It was a pleasure meeting with you, sir, "Robert said, "and we look forward to our meeting with you next Friday. Please call us if you have any further questions or if you can't make it for some reason."

Heinrich shook their hands. They then exited the trailer, climbed into their sedan, and drove off.

The shocked and surprised scientist watched as they slowly made their way out of the trailer park.
