Chapter 6- A Night to Forget

"There better be a damn good reason for this intrusion, Ottoman!" Erwin Kauffman shouted.

He and Heinrich were standing in foyer of Erwin's mansion. Erwin was disheveled and in a robe, glaring at him.

"Please forgive the intrusion, Mr Kauffman. However this is something I knew I should inform you of immediately," Heinrich replied.

Next he told him the whole story. They sat down at a table and Heinrich pointed out all the readings and what the graphs contained.

Heinrich felt another pair of eyes on him and looked up to see Rita standing in the doorway, also in a robe, glaring at him.

"Those readings demonstrate that it is safe enought to drill there, old man!" she shouted. She glanced over at Erwin who then hostily looked back at Heinrich. It was easy to see he was on her side.

"It is not safe enough by our company's standards and probably none of our competitors either," Heinrich replied.

"Well I just changed them to where they do meet our standards," Erwin said.

Heinrich looked at both of them and saw it was futile to try and reason with either one at this point. He rose, put his cap on and started towards the door. Opening it, he turned back to look at both of them.

"You better snort as much China White as you can right now, " he said. "because I'm taking these charts to the drilling company, Norway Petroleum, and the Mexican govenment, who has jurisdiction in those waters. We'll see what they have to say."

Out the door he went. As he pulled out of the driveway he could feel the eyes peering through curtains at him.

Heinrich made it home and explained the whole thing to Greta. He also made an appointment with the Ambassador of Mexico at the consulate tomorrow morning.

Greta was stunned. She lay in Heinrich's arms and shuttered.

"What are we going to do, Heinrich? Your company will probably go down the tubes now. I know you are near rertirement age, but you still have a ways to go."

"We will be OK, my dear," he replied, "God will help us. We are doing what is right. I will not have anyone's death or injury on my hands due to a rig accident because I chose to do nothing."

Of course they did not attend the gala event that evening. The pair went to bed early and held each other closely. Greta wept and Heinrich did the best he could to comfort her.  In just a short while they were fast asleep.

Heinrich was awoken by a noise. He rose out of bed and glanced at the clock which said 2:46 AM

He was very careful not to wake Greta as he opened the drawer to his nightstand and pulled out a Smith and Wesson 38 Blue Steel Revolver.

Stepping into the hallway, he gently shut the door to his bedroom and turned on the light. Nothing there.

After making his way downstairs, he turned on another light, which gave him a good view of the foyer and living room. Again, nobody there.

He made his rounds covering the entire first floor. All was quiet and there was nothing out of the ordinary.

After turning off all the downstairs lights, Heinrich made his way back up to the bedroom and opened the door. Putting the weapon away and lying back down,he reached for Greta.

She wasn't there.

Next, the bedroom light was turned on and he saw three men in black skimasks.  One was in back of Greta, who was now standing, holding a knife to her throat. One was stanidng next to the light switch as he had just turned it on, and the other rose from kneeling on the other side of the bed. Two of them had pistols aimed right at Heinrich.

"I'm not gonna beat around the bush, Pops," the one standing next to the light switch said, "give us those graphs and nobody gets hurt. Ya don't and Ms Ottoman is gonna be food for the worms."

Heinrich looked at Greta. Tears were flowing down her cheeks. He then got up and ran straight to his desk in his study and came back with the graphs.

"Here," he said, "please take this and go. Leave us alone. Please!'

"Thanks Pops!" the apparent leader said, "good boy! Now one more thing. If you're thinking about going to the cops, the FBI, CIA, Canadian Mounties, Navy SEALS, anybody like that, I strongly suggest you don't." Then the man walked over to Heinrich and told him to get on his knees. Next he bent down and looked him in the eyes.

"Ya gotta understand," he continued in a harsh whisper, "we're good at what we do. Real good. And I'm sure you wouldn't want us to come back and do something like this to your beautiful wife, would you?'

With that, he struck Heinrich across the face with his pistol butt. Greta screamed. The one behind her put his hand over her mouth.

The other two pounded and pounded Heinrich with the butts of their weapons. After they were finished, they ran out of the room.

"Heinrich!" Greta yelled as she ran to his side. He was rolling on the floor in agony, hands covering his face.

Then Greta collapsed. Her husband of over thirty years saw this, and with all the strength he could muster, crawled to the phone.
