I wrote this poem to commemorate Pride Month. As an out-and-proud gay man, I feel it's my responsibility to represent my community everywhere I go. There are still many stereotypes that minimizes us; there are still people who believe we belong in Hell. We've got politicians trying to strip us from our earned civil rights, some of them even going as far as trying to promote "conversion therapy" as a problem solver. There are camps across the United States that promise to "take the gay away". And this is just the U.S.! I can't begin to mention all of the horrible things that happen to people like me in more conservative countries. These things have forced us to stay in the shadows for so long. It's pushed many of us to hide the things that makes us unique in order to fit in a hetero-normative world. Well, you know what? We've still got a long way to go, but today I've had enough. This poem doesn't intend to solve any problems, as we are such a divided society that refuses to hear the opposite side, but I believe in education, and I believe in love. This poem is about liberation, and celebrating the history of my community and the often forgotten heroes that have made it possible for me to love whoever I want.

Part of Me (Pride Poem)

There's this part of me I longed to keep hidden;
Untold stories never meant to be written.
There's this secret I've always wanted to tell,
But if said out loud it would send me straight to Hell.

So instead I found a place where I could be;
Somewhere I could do what felt natural to me.
I danced in the shadows and lived among them;
Away from those who pointed fingers and condemned.

But those shadows they weren't enough,
For they kept me from my right to fall in love.
So it was time for this part of me,
to be let loose and just roam free.

I owe it to those who came before;
To achieve equality they all once swore.
They did it for you and they did it for me,
So we cannot kneel down to those who disagree.

There's this part of me I wanted hidden;
Untold stories now being written.
There's this secret I no longer have to tell,
And I am ready to stand up and raise some Hell.
