The Pendulum

The pendulum of hope swings wildly to and fro,
all to one extreme, then the other, little do we know

that the answer lies somewhere in between,
so we're caught in this back and forth, to each extreme.

We lurch like drunken sailors, unable to settle down,
instead of the shining city, we find Unsettled Town.

And with today's political polarization, it'll only get worse,
it's just human nature, we have to be hit over the head first,

with reality, before we learn, and now reality itself is under attack.
The person who we look to to calm the waters is claiming that facts

are subject to interpretation, not proven, and set in stone,
that what is true and what is real is up to him alone

It seems to me he's dancing on the edge, and playing
a most dangerous game with the bullshit he's saying.

Never before, at least here in America, has such a brazen lust
for power sent us hurling down the lane of Donny-World or bust,

and I'm afraid it'll be bust.
