My entry for Unmasked Delusions competition for robot stories.

Robbie

On the morning of his tenth birthday Peter woke up in a state of total excitement. He knew what he wanted, more than anything else in the world, and this year he was sure he would be given it.

There was one box waiting for him on the table, wrapped with paper and ribbon. Could it be? It was just the right size. Peter’s hands shook with excitement as he reached towards the package. He had to know, had to see......The paper fell away from the box and Peter leaped to his feet with a cheer.

Robbie the Robot was there in front of him, all his own.

Peter opened the box, lifted out the robot and stood it on the table in front of him. It was a pretty impressive toy, standing twelve inches high. There were a variety of buttons just beckoning to be pressed. One made it’s arms move, another made it take slow, stiff steps forward. Peter could not contain his delight any longer.

Mom! Dad! Come and see!”

While he was waiting, Peter continued to press buttons. One produced beeps, another made Robbie’s eyes flash red. Peter was almost speechless when a button produced a voice; ‘I....am.....a.....robot!’ It was brilliant; way better than he’d ever dreamed it would be.

Peter turned as his mother entered the room. She smiled when she saw her son’s delighted face.

Thanks, Mom! It’s brilliant! Watch what happens when I press this!” Peter pressed the button that had made the robot walk before but this time it did something else. There was a whirring sound and the robot turned to face the woman. “Kill. Kill,” it said in monotone, and before either Peter or his Mom realised what was happening a red beam of light shot out from it’s eyes.

Isn’t it just so......” Where was she? Peter was amazed to see his mother laying on the floor, a red hole clearly visible, still steaming, right between her eyes. Looking from his mother to the robot, Peter jumped when the door opened again and his father stepped in.

Dad.....” Peter was silenced by the whirring noise. Why had it started up again? He hadn’t pressed any buttons this time. Had he?

Intruder. Intruder!” That same monotone voice, that same flash of red.

Get down, Dad,” Peter shouted but he was too late; his father hit the floor just as his Mom had done moments earlier.

Stop it! Stop it!” Peter was crying, tears running down his face. He reached out to turn the robot off but the switch did not seem to be working. He frantically moved his finger from button to button, pressing them one after the other. None of them worked and then there was that whirring sound......that red light!

I....am.....a......robot!......I......will.....destroy!” Robbie said in his monotone voice, talking to no one now but himself.

Thank you, Mike. I saw the competition and just had to sit down and have a go at writing something for it!

Ouch. That manufacturer's only getting one star for sending them a defective product, that's for sure.
Nice.

That was my first idea, Moa, a Dalek. But then I thought, go a bit further back in time and go with Robbie. Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment.

Scary story, the robot must have been an evil genius creation... I bet Peter'll think twice about what he wants next year! Great story, Hully!
