When you get married you get a new husband or a new wife. But with it you also get in-laws. Here we will talk about the mother-in-law, the mother of your husband (or wife). The term in English defines well what's really happening when you get married. You chose your spouse, but not his (her) family. You get it automatically, it's part of the package. Most of the time you wouldn't even talk to them if it was not for your spouse. They just got in by the law. And you got in by the law too. So, you have to bear each other, at least on some occasions like Christmas and other family gatherings. You might be lucky and fall in love with them, or hate them, which is also a possibility.

Diane is a mother-in-law. She had no choice but to accept her fate. "Mama's boy" had grown up, fell in love, and decided to get married. "The Big Wedding" took place in "Manhattan". She played the role of "The Good Mother", by accepting her son's decision, and being supportive. "The Father of the Bride" was somehow happy her daughter "Annie Hall" got married with Diane's son. Many people were invited on the occasion: "The Godfather", "The Little Drummer Girl", "Mrs Soffel", "The Lemon Sisters", "The Other Sister", and many more.

When the priest asked Diane's son if he would love, cherish, trust, comfort, honor, keep and care for Annie in sickness and in health, in sorrow and in joy, and be faithful to Annie for as long as they both shall live? Diane's son was so moved by the moment that he just forgot the line he was supposed to say. So, he just said what was on his mind.

"I Will, I Will... for Now"

He improvised, but he was true to himself. Nobody knows what's next. So many marriages end up in divorce, and the ones who survive don't always respect all the vows. Anyway, if you are sure you'll do it. What's the need to promise? You just do it. It's just an evidence. But human beings live in a sea of doubts and contradictions. We are so prone to errors that we need to promise to reassure ourself and the others we will do it, always. That's the difficulty: to do it, always, till the death. In reality you just don't know, cause life is so long and uncertain. You hope for, and that's the best you can do.

After the religious ceremony, the party at the hotel. A friend of Diane's son played a tune on the piano. He made a mistake in the middle of it and Diane's son got annoyed and shouted:

"Play it Again, Sam."

Sam started it over and made exactly the same mistake again cause he was so embarrassed for making the mistake the first time.

"Play it Again, Sam."

Shouted again Diane's son. Everybody would laugh, and it would be the end of it.

When the night fell the moon showed up. It was full moon and everybody felt high and excited on the terrace. Some of Diane's son friends got drunk, and one of them went overboard shouting:

"Shoot the Moon"

Hopefully, most people present didn't get it. If your mind is a little bit twisted like mine, you know to what moon it refers. He'll do it when he leaves the wedding party with the bride to spend the rest of the night in the hotel suite.

"The Only Thrill" for Diane is the "Baby Boom" coming. She wants to have many grandchildren. The day Annie made an announcement about her pregnancy, it was for Diane a "Morning Glory". Annie was so proud of her "Darling Companion" (Diane's son) for having shot the moon so well for the last few weeks, and finally get her pregnant. However, everything was no perfect. Somehow, Diane and Annie were competing for Diane's son attention. When Diane wanted to make her point, she would say bossily:

"Because I Said So" "Look Who's Talking Now"

When she got older she started to smooth. There's no use to fight with your daughter-in-law. A younger woman has more energy. Diane was now too tired to fight over things. She just let things go, as if she didn't care anymore. She had more wisdom and it showed in what she said. So, no more sentences that sounded like:

"Because I Said So" "Look Who's Talking Now"

Instead.

"A sense of freedom is something that, happily, comes with age and life experience."

For sure, when you sense death is getting closer an closer, you stop waisting your time talking bullshit. Unless you are the kind of person whose last words will sound like:

"Because I Said So" "Look Who's Talking Now"

"It's kind of true, you do disappear off the planet if you are a middle-aged woman, but that has some advantages as well."

As you get old, you become physically weaker and uglier, but your soul and your mind get larger than life.

"I never understood the idea that you're supposed to mellow as you get older. Slowing down isn't something I relate to at all. The goal is to continue in good and bad, all of it."

She slowed down physically. But her soul and her mind through positive thinking and healthy attitude had the insights and perspectives younger women didn't have. Maintaining your mind active and positive thinking and healthy emotions will keep Alzheimer at bay in your old days.

"Memories are simply moments that refuse to be ordinary"

She left the world with these words, and that said a lot about the kind of women she had become in her old age.

"So, goodnight Diane. You'll be remembered by your son and your grandchildren for the memories that refused to be ordinary."
