Hedwig’s Legacy.

She’s like some kind of hero to us owls; a role-model, although one that is impossible to live up to. How can any of us hope to live up to Hedwig’s legacy?

She was our poster girl. We’d hear stories of her daring antics when we were owlets, of how she helped her friend overcome such an evil presence. Harry, we were told, would never have been able to do what he did without Hedwig’s bravery.

Wouldn’t she swoop down chimneys, through windows, carrying important messages to exactly the right recipient. And that was no easy task. We’d all tried it, swooping in to open windows. Hardly any of us had made it inside. Our wingspan was the problem; spread out wings were just too big! There was a real art to folding them back just the right amount at the appropriate time.

And couldn’t she summon up an army of other owls to create a distraction, not only to gather them up but to let them know just what they should do once they were there. She was special, an owl in a million!

What about that plumage, snowy white and black. We are all tawny, of varying shades of greys and browns. So drab to look at in contrast to Hedwig! She was and is our superstar. Forget the Potter boy, she was the real hero. At least so far as us avians are concerned.

We might not have much of a chance to match her, but I honestly can’t see a time when we will ever stop trying.
