Chapter 6

A sudden change

The next morning, it was the second day of school, and I was in my bedroom, as every morning. This morning, I didn’t smell any bacon from downstairs, or hear any footsteps making their way across the floor.

I’d say that’s what woke me up that morning. That was weird to me, because that hadn’t happened since when three years ago me and my parents were on holiday, and we had breakfast in the restaurant, not in our kitchen.

I got up from my bed, and quietly opened my doors, in case my parents were still asleep.

I walked down stairs, in my T-Shirt, and my shorts. As I arrived down, I saw nobody in sight. I continued walking to the kitchen, and noticed a half full coffee mug on the dinner table.

The smell of coffee had filled the kitchen. Then as I turned my head, with my barely open eyes, I saw a note near the microwave. I walked up to it, scratching my head through my messy hair.

I held the note with my fingers, and was reading it. The words were pretty blurry, so I rubbed my eyes. Half way through the second sentence, I could actually read the words.

The note was from my mother, saying that she was taking some time to herself. The note said :

‘’ I’ve been thinking, and I decided that I have to take some time away from all this. Don’t take it the wrong way, I love you. Both.’’

I thought to myself that she paused before writing ‘Both’

I continued reading ‘’ I’m going to spend a few days at the spa, and meet up with some friends. I’ll be back soon. Take care.’’ At the end she put a smiley face, trying to make it a less of a big deal than it actually was. Or, I suppose she did have to take that time to herself.

I slightly swung my arm, and the note flew back on the surface.

‘’ What the hell……’’ I quietly murmured to myself.

I walked back up the stairs, and just as I reached the second floor, my parents bedroom door opened, and my dad walked out.

‘’ Hey dad!’’ I said. ‘’ Hello son! Have you seen your mother this morning?’’ He asked waiting by his door, as I walked up to my bedroom door.

‘’ Why don’t you go downstairs, you’ll see.’’ I said quickly.

‘’ Ok, I suppose.’’ He responded. I didn’t want to stand there and explain. I walked into my room, and started to get dressed for school.

‘’ Kevin?’’ He shouted out from downstairs. ‘’ Yes?’’ I said putting my shirt on.

‘’ Is your mother really away?’’ He asked again.

‘’ I’m pretty sure. That’s what it says in the note isn’t it?’’

‘’ Yeah, it is.’’ He said.

‘’ Why? I’m not really that surprised, are you?’’ I asked dad. ‘’ No, not really, never mind.’’

Once I was done getting dressed, I came downstairs, and saw dad sitting at the table, holding the note, and looking at it. ‘’ You ok dad?’’ I asked him, walking up to the table, and resting my hands on the table, slightly leaning forward.

‘’ Why didn’t she tell us?’’ He asked.

‘’ I don’t know, I guess maybe it was just a spontaneous idea!’’ I didn’t quite understand why he was so bothered by it.

‘’ Yeah…… know your mother has always been like this.’’ He said getting up from the table ,and making himself a coffee.

‘’ Really?’’ I asked, standing besides the table. ‘’ Oh yes, always coming up with things, and then expecting others to be ok with it.’’ He said pouring hot water in his mug.

‘’ Are you not ok with her being away for a few days?’’

‘’ I’m not flattered, but she could have at least told me that she’s going away, I mean I know we were in a fight, we are a part of this somewhat marriage!’’

I was actually surprised that he cared so much! I walked up to dad, and patted him on his shoulder saying

‘’  Don’t worry, she’ll be back soon, and you’ll be able to talk about it.’’ I then looked over at the clock, and said.

‘’ Oh, I’m going to be late for school, I have to go.’’ I said rushing upstairs to get my bag.

‘’ Ok son, have a good day at school!’’ he said to me, from downstairs.

I rushed back downstairs towards the doors.

‘’ Sorry, I wasted your time, you didn’t even get time to do anything.’’ He said walking into the living room, and sitting down on the couch.

‘’ It’s ok dad. Got to go, see you later.’’ I said and walked out of the house, hoping he’d be alright. There were many fights between them along the years, but none of them had pulled a move like this before.
