What Have I Done?

The sun was beating down on me, full strength rays burning my face. I opened my eyes then shut them again quickly. The light was too blindingly bright. Even with my eyelids closed I could see it so I turned my head. That was when I realised that I was laying outside.

The grass tickled my nose, made me want to sneeze. And I itched. As I became more awake I noticed the unevenness of the ground, the rocks and stones that were digging in to me. Where was I? And why was I asleep outside?

The more awake I became the more aware I was that there was something wrong with my hands. The flies that kept buzzing around them was the first clue, but then I noticed that they were stiff, sticky. It felt a bit like I had been dipping them in treacle or something, that had then dried out in the sun. I moved my fingers, shaped my hands into fists, released my grip and only then did I take a look at them.

They were red! Stained with some kind of thick liquid........blood? What had I done? I shut my eyes for a second, almost too scared to look around me. Could I really have hurt someone, killed someone even? And why couldn’t I remember where I was?

I forced myself to open my eyes, to sit up and look around. I had to find some way of working out exactly where I was. Once I was sitting up it all came flooding back – I knew where I was and what I was doing.

Fruit picking was really tough work, especially in bright sunlight. I must have fallen asleep. And my hands were not blood-covered, it was berry juice. I’d take a couple of minutes to let my panic subside then I’d better get back to work before anyone noticed I’d been sleeping on the job.
