I’m using you, she says; as though startled by the truth

As though the words are foreign, are new in some way

He supposes to her they are, although to him they’re old, familiar

A reminder of flickering flames, snuffed out by bitter tears

That’s fine, he reassures; more relieved she doesn’t lie

It’s alright, he reaffirms; there’s no reason you should cry

I knew it from the start, the way things would turn out

I knew I would be used for something, by you—no doubt

I didn’t want to cause you pain; I never thought you should feel shame

Don’t waste your heart being hurt for me; don’t make our tale a tragedy

I’m killing you, she says; as though she’s known it all along

You’re loving me, he assures; and this could never be called wrong
