Everyone was cheering. Adrenaline pumped through her blood. She stared at the trapeze net. She walked onto stage smiling warmly at the crowd. A mixture of ‘awes’ and ‘oohs’ spread over them. She lightly grabbed her unicycle. A bead of sweat ran down her temple. She put a ribbon between her teeth, holding the unicycle with her mouth. She slowly climbed up the ladder. The flour on her feet was making little puffs as she went along. She finally reached the top. Smiled. Grabbed onto the bar. She jumped. The bar her hands were on swung back and forth gliding her in the air. She counted each time it went back and fourth.
“1”
“2”
“3”
She held her breath and then, let go, opening the palms of her hands to catch the other bar.
“Success!” She said, louder than she intended.
“Okay, time to do the hard part.” She said through gritted teeth. She took the ribbon from her mouth, praying it didn’t untie and let the unicycle fall. She grabbed onto the two ropes hanging from the bar and set the unicycle’s wheel onto the bar. She swung back and fourth. Then she sat on the unicycle. Everyone in the crowd gasped. Don did the same. She then, tightened all of her muscles, as her teacher had taught her to do, and jumped, still on the unicycle onto the next trapeze bar. Her heart thumped so loudly she thought it would explode. She stumbled a little, caught her breath, just as the crowd did the same. She held her hands, slowly up in the air, letting go of the ropes. Her only safety net. The crowd cheered and she put the ribbon of the unicycle into her mouth. She grabbed onto the railing and started to climb down the ladder. Her legs felt like noodles. She was shaking all over. She bowed and walked off stage, getting pats of congratulation mixed with pity. She ran back to her dressing room and grabbed her phone. She typed in; news, Japan, hoping her mother was safe. She clicked on the first one that popped up. The date on the bottom said it was four weeks ago, but she ignored it. It showed a girl, with long black hair, in a little cage, carried by guards. They set the cage down and the girl clapped her hands. There was a boy there too. Probably the same age as the girl, who was in handcuffs that were held by fierce guards. The boy was crying. Very hard. On the other side, to which the boy was facing, stood a middle-aged woman and man. They were crying as well. The Empress popped onto the screen and held up her thumb, smiling. A gun fired. Both of the adults crashed to the ground, lifelessly. The girl in the cage clapped excitedly while the boy’s face was covered in tears.
