Dylan Thomas wrote about not going gentle into that good night about his dying father. Today I think people are living too long in too much pain.

Slip away softly into that good night

For all your hard times are done.

Do not struggle nor put up a fight

Your loved ones will understand

At last the battle's nearly over

Not one of us has won, only lost

The suffering I see you bear

On your face, in your eyes

No animal would be put through

Agony no person should ensure

The daily torture  will end soon

For your sake I pray and for mine.

Embrace the dying of the light

Your afternoon sun turned to rain

Beautiful day ending in horror

It's time for the heartbreak farewell.

They say you had a good innings

I say the game played too long

They will say you lived to ninety

These last ten years weren't a life.

I promise I won't ever forget you

In your glorious summer days prime

You squeeze my hand urgently tight

Slip away softly into that good night.
