Nick knew it was her the minute he walked into the cafe.

She looked good. Then terror struck. What if she didn’t recognize him? Or worse ignored him.

“Nick?” She cocked her head.

“Lisa.”  He managed a dumb smile of relief. “You look great.”

“It’s been so long,” she said.

She didn’t repay the compliment. The mirror reminded him daily the toll his lifestyle had taken on what she had once called his Mediterranean hotness.

“You still own the club?” she asked.

He remembered her toying with the three olives she insisted was a martini requirement. Elegant and classy compared to the half-dressed women that mobbed the place.

“Did you ever marry?”

“Three times,” he laughed. “Just can’t seem to get it right.”

“How about you?”

“Yes, married an insurance salesman.”

A fantasy of his bouncers roughing up the insurance salesmen made him smile.

“And a boy in college.”

“Boring?” She offered.

“No, it’s what you always wanted. I’m happy for you.”

But maybe she wasn’t so happy. She’d said boring not him.

Her eyes clouded over and he knew he was right. Her buttoned-up, briefcase carrying salesman wasn’t doing it for her.
