I send my tour group of kids off to the cafeteria after showing them around the museum for a few hours. I realize that I take more notice in the different personalities of the kids I give tours to, the whole time wondering what my child will be like. I guess I really won’t know until she or he develops their personality on their own. I’m so excited.
When I call Sloan at my lunch break and she doesn’t answer I take it as I hint that she won’t be coming until later tonight. She is probably in class or asleep. I think about calling Tristan's mom but wimp out and decide to hold it off until sometime next week. I do text Tristan a thank you for the lunch he sent me in with and answer Rachel’s text that she sent yesterday. She agreed with me that she, Sloan and I are definitely going to have to meet up this weekend. I ignored the part of her text that suggested we go to a bar. I guess this weekend will be a good time to tell the both of them.
When I finish my tour and see the kids drive off on the school bus they arrived on, I go back to the employee area. I open the door and try to make a run for it when it registers to me that André is sitting at the small table, drinking a coke. I quickly turn and walk back out of the door. I don’t know what my plan is because I definitely need my things if I want to go home, which I do. I hear footsteps shuffling around behind the door. I squeeze my eyes shut and pray that it isn’t him coming. I can’t possibly get away in enough time also I hate that I need to at all. He should be the one who feels the need to run from my me, not the other way around.
“Kate.” My fears are confirmed when the door opens and his voice that makes me really mad comes softly behind me. I sigh and think about just beelining it away from him and to be completely honest the only thing stopping me from doing exactly that is my heels that are hurting me enough without doing a lap around the museum in them. I turn slowly with a very mean scowl firmly in place.
“What?” I say, sounding tired.
“I just wanted to apologize for what happened.” Damn straight he should be apologizing. I don’t actually know what to say to him because I’m too stubborn to forgive him, so what now? “I don’t know what got into me,” he says and looks down.
“Yeah, I don’t know what got into you either,” I say and walk right past him, feeling like a huge badass. I probably wouldn’t be doing this if I wasn’t pregnant but I am so I’m just going to have to deal with the awkwardness between us. Pregnancy seems to be changing my personality more and more every day. Oh well.
I grab my stuff from the employee area and decide to go out the back door that's only used by staff. At least now I won’t have to see André until Monday. I get in my car and check to see if Sloan has called me back but find that she hasn’t. She better not cancel because I’m way too excited to see her. I drive home and call Tristan when I get into the apartment building, smiling at the very cute young man who just started here last week as I do. I definitely prefer him over the last girl who enjoyed seeing Tristan a little bit too much each time we walked by her desk. I’m stepping into the elevator when he answers.
“Hello, Beautiful,” he says in a very cheery voice.
“Hi, Handsome. When will you be home?” I ask and click the penthouse button.
“I should be home by six. Is Sloan there yet?”
“No, I called her at work but she didn’t answer.”
“Do you think she’s still coming?”
“Probably, I just don’t know when.” I sigh and hear voices behind Tristan come through the phone.
“Oh, I gotta go. I’ll see you at home. I love you.”
“I love you more,” I say with a smile.
“That’s not possible, my beautiful, amazing girl,” he says then hangs up.
The elevator doors open and I step into the apartment. I head straight for the kitchen and straight for the bag of chips that I have been thinking about all day. I grab a handful and walk to the bedroom, shoving chips in my mouth as I do. I head for the closet, desperately in need of ridding myself of this dress and heels. I realized today that my coworkers are going to find out real soon that I'm pregnant because I can’t even wear tight dresses anymore and I really am growing more and more each day. I turn the light on in the closet and scream when I see my crazy, red headed best friend standing in front of me.
“What the fuck?” I shout and try to swallow the chips that are in my mouth.
“Hey, bitch,” she says casually like I didn’t just catch her standing in my closet with no lights on.
“What… When… Why” I’m stuttering because I have no idea which question to ask first.
“I didn’t call you because I wanted it to be a surprise,” she says as she walks over to me and hugs me.
“Why were you in my closet?” I ask as she releases me and takes a chip out of my hand. She turns and looks around the closet, plopping my chip in her mouth as she does. I'm going to try to forget about that.
“Part of the surprise,” she shrugs.
“No, it wasn’t. You were going to steal my clothes,” I accuse and I’m not at all surprised. That’s Sloan for you.
“How do you even have this much clothing?” she asks as she runs her hand over a rail of my dresses.
“I have a job,” I say as I take my heels off.
“Yeah, I don’t think all the clothes in the world is worth working at a museum,” she mumbles and before I can defend myself she screeches suddenly and turns back to me.
“Let me see your ring,” she demands even though she already has my hand in her tight grip. “God Damn,” she murmurs at my hand. “I really didn’t realize how rich he was until I got here,” she says and looks back up at me. “Why didn’t you tell me you are rich now?” she asks.
“I’m not rich now,” I say and pull my hand away from her.
“Then how do you explain all of this?” She drifts her arm around the big closet but I ignore her and walk back into the bedroom.
“Where is Tristan?” she asks as she flops down on my bed.
“He should be home soon,” I say as I slip my watch off my wrist and take my earrings out.
“I can’t wait.”
“I know, I know,” I mumble because I really do know. Sloan does this thing where she tells any boy I introduce to her all of my most embarrassing experiences. It’s awesome.
I go and lay down next to Sloan on the bed, both of us staring up at the ceiling.
“How’s school?” I ask and turn my head to look at her.
“Not too good, Kate. I don’t think I’m going to finish.” I lean up on my elbows and gape down at her.
“Why? What happened to getting your masters and becoming a teacher?” I ask in complete shock. Sloan has always said that she wants to be a teacher. No matter what she never changed her mind.
“I know but I just don’t know if I can do that much school. I mean four years of college was enough for me. How am I supposed to do two more years?” she asks like she really expects an answer from me.
“Have you spoken to your parents about this?”
“No,” she huffs and I hear the front door opening. Sloan shoots off the bed and gasps in excitement like the whole conversation we just had never happened. “Is that him?” she asks down to me. I smile and nod then watch her run out of the room.
I sigh and try to prepare myself for what’s about to happen. I guess I should really be warning Tristan. I get off the bed and walk out of the room, finding Sloan and Tristan by the front door.
“Kate!” she screeches when she sees me.
“What?” I ask.
“You didn’t tell me he was so freaking hot,” she shouts and points a finger in Tristan directions. I shake my head but can’t help but laugh at my friend who was never given a filter. I shrug and walk past her and into his arms. He hugs me tight then kisses me.
“Hello, Beautiful,” he says down to me with a smile.
“Hello, Handsome. How was your day?” I ask up to him.
“Terribly boring,” he says as he leans in for another kiss. I smile against his lips when I hear Sloan grumbling things under her breath behind me. I turn around and see her scowling at us. Tristan wraps his arms around me and pulls me against his chest then rests his chin on my shoulder.
“What?” I ask with raised eyebrows and a smile.
“I hate people who are in love. Can we order some food or something? I’m starving,” she moans as she stomps off into the kitchen.
“Well, it’s good to see that she has made herself at home,” I say dryly when she is out of view.
“I like her,” Tristan says into my ear.
“Just promise me one thing,” I plead as I turn around in his arms. I look up at him as he strokes my hair.
“What am I promising?” he asks.
“You have to still love me when she leaves here on Sunday,” I say completely seriously up at him.
“What do you mean?” he asks with a big laugh.
“I’m trying to prepare you. I was a pretty weird kid and you will be hearing about a different side of me. See this as a test of how much you love me.” He smiles down at me and strokes my cheek with his thumb.
“I happen to be very good at taking tests. So don’t you worry,” he says as he turns me towards the kitchen and smacks my ass. I don’t think he will find this so this is funny in a couple minutes.
