The Twins: A New Discovery

By: Alicia Rose and Andre Rison

The black smoke flooded my lungs and coursed through my veins. Gasping for air, searching the cold ruins of the streets for my brother, Chase.  I limped to the strong depressing base as my cuts and stabs stung and burned.  At that second, I saw myself face to face with cold, vicious, red eyes.

Hold up!  If I’m gonna tell this story right, I have to start from the beginning. It was an ordinary Tuesday.  The sun shining, blinding me from the world. The water glittering and sparkling a bright turquoise.  I was in my silk pink robe with my purple fuzzy pajamas, and I was eating my favorite cereal. I glanced from the corner of my hazel eyes and noticed that the time was half past seven!  I rushed upstairs and slapped on blue ripped jeans, pitch black combat boots, a white V-neck, and a red flannel shirt tied around my waist. I tied my hair back in a messy, high ponytail, and grabbed my backpack.

“Oh shoot,” I muttered. “I am so late.”

I sprinted out the door, down the block like my life depended on it. I ran down the street, turn a corner to the left, and burst through the doors of the library.

“You’re late, Gabby,” mentioned the Ms. Phillips, the librarian.

“Sorry Mrs. Phillips,” I squeaked.

I dropped my heavy backpack on the floor next to Ms. Phillips’ 4 ft. chair.  I spent the whole afternoon stacking books and reading to children, until a boy with the same shaggy, strawberry hair and hazel eyes and all the same features as me walked over to Ms. Phillips’ desk and asked for a book.

“I’m sorry my dear, but we are out of stock on that one. In fact, I just checked out the last one,” Ms. Phillips explained.  As soon as he was done, he thanked Ms. Phillips and walked away.

“M...Ms. Phillips? Who was that?” I questioned.

“I don’t know, but he said his name was Chase,” she explained. “He looks awfully like you though.”

After work, I spent the rest of the day at home trying to figure out who he was, and why he was there.

“Why does he look so much like me?” I thought. “Okay, I just need to call my friends and have a girls’ night out,” I muttered. “First, I need to call my mom.”

“Ring ring.”

“Speak of the devil,” I uttered. “Hi Mom.”

“Hi, Honey. Hey, did you make it to work?” asked mom.

“Yes, Mom, I made it to work. Not on time but I made it.”

“What?  That is unacceptable, Gabby!” Mom yelled.

“Geez Mom, cut me some slack. I’m no superhero.” “Well I know that, but still.”

“Hey, I’m going to go out with Brittany and Julie. Is that alright?”

“Well alright. But just remember we will revisit this.”

“Cool. Thanks, Mom. Bye. Love you.”

“I love you too, Gabby.”

“Beep!”

“Now I’ve got to call the girls.--------- Hey Julie, it’s Gabby.”

“Hey Gabby,” Julie replied.

Let me put you on hold. ----------- Okay I’m back now, and I’ve got Britney on the line, too.”

“What up girls?” yelled Britney.

“Hey Britney,” replied Julie.

“Listen you guys, I am seriously stressed out and I need a girls’ night out.”

”Oh, so do I,” Brittany groaned.

“Same!” answered Julie.

“Great. Meet me at my house at 9:00. See you guys later.”

“See you then,” they both said in unison.

“Beep.”

“Oh, another call. I wonder who that could be?” I said.  “Hello? Gabby speaking.’

“Hey, Gabby, it’s Adam.”

“Oh hey, Adam.”

“Hey. Look, there’s going to be a party at my house. Do you want to come?” Adam asked.

“Really? You want me to come to your party?” I was on the verge of squealing from delight.

“Yeah,” he replied. Well, I was going to go out with Julie and Britney, but  we didn’t have any plans, so we’ll be there. Thanks!”

“No problem. Bye.”

“Beep”

“Okay, it’s eight-fifty,” I muttered as I looked at the clock.  “I have ten minutes to find my best party outfit, get dressed, and do my makeup and hair.”

I went upstairs to find an outfit. As soon as I got in my room, I shoved my closet doors open. I saw, and I am not kidding when I say this, two moths literally fly out of my closet.

“There’s nothing in here! Ugh! I have to steal Mom’s clothes. Again.”

I dashed to my mom’s room so fast that I almost ran my face into the wall. At least I thought that was what was going to happen, so I closed my eyes out of reflex. Then, something  stopped me, and I knew it wasn’t the wall. I opened my eyes and caught a glimpse of something purple like disappearing.

“What.  Was.  That?” I said breathlessly.  “Never mind that. You’ve got a party to get ready for. With the cutest boy in school.”

I opened my mom’s closet and started looking there.

“There’s actually some decent party clothes in here,” I thought. “Ooohh. This one’s fancy.”

I had chosen an emerald green dress that was short and tight. I got dressed, then I walked into my mom’s bathroom to start applying my makeup. As I was putting on my mascara, I noticed something sticking out of one of the drawers in the cabinet.

“What the…,” I muttered.

I silently and slowly opened the drawer. I grabbed the gold lining of  a picture frame. As I was turning over the item in my clutches, I held my breath. I turned it over and saw my mom, but she wasn’t alone.

“Who is this guy with Mom?” I wondered.

I could tell by her clothes and how young she looked, that this picture was at least 20 years old.

“I’ll have to ask her later,” I thought.

-------------------------------------------

“Alright girls, you better be ready to party!” I yelled as I got in my car. My mom had gone all out for my first car. She had used all her savings to buy me a ruby-red Volkswagen Bug convertible.

“Heck yeah,” said Julie. “I had to sneak out of my house because I’m grounded, so let’s make this night count!

“Whoohoo!” screamed Brittany.

“Come on, let’s go,” I said. I closed the door, buckled my seatbelt, and hit the road. I drove to the freeway entrance, and was about to turn on the radio when I heard something abnormal outside my car. Brittany looked out the window and saw that I had a flat tire.

“Pull over,” she whispered. “Gabby, pull over immediately!”

“Why?”

“You have a flat tire. It’s starting to melt!” she alerted me. I pushed my emergency light button and started pulling over toward the right. From the corner of my eye, I saw a gleaming white Prius spinning around as fast as a mechanical bull with dents and scratches covering the entire thing. Then I saw the driver’s face, his shaggy strawberry blond hair and hazel eyes. It was Chase. I rushed over to him but he was already getting loaded into an ambulance.

At the sight of that, my stomach turned inside out and I could hear my heart beating out of my chest.

“Who is that?” Brittany asked.

“H..he is a friend,” I replied. “L...look, call your  parents and...and go home. Call Adam, too and tell him we were in an accident. I am gonna go with Ch...Ch...Chase.”

“You know his name?”asked Julie

“Y...Yes” I stuttered

Then, Julie and Brittany went to call their moms. Then,I slowly picked up the phone and raised it to my ear.

“M..Mom”I finally spit out,” I..I n..need you to pick me up and take...take me to the..the hospital”

“Honey! Are you alright? Is everything okay?”

“Mom I’m fine ,but my friend got into a car crash”

“I’m on my way”, She confirmed

As soon as I got to the hospital, I raced to a nurse.

“Hello?” I asked the nurse. “Can I see Chase?” I begged.

“Right this way,” She directed. “Down the hall first door on your right.”

“Thank you,” I replied.

I ran into Chase’s room, where he laid unconscious “

“Oh my God,” I rasped.

Chase was covered in bruises cuts and scars.

“Hello Gabby,” a voice greeted. “I am Dr. James.”

“H...How do you know my name?” I stuttered.

“I was your parents’ doctor,” he said.

“Parents? I only have my mom. *GASP* Mom!” I shouted.

“Your mother is fine. I just got off the phone with her. She told me you were coming. She had to leave to meet with someone very important,” he stated.

I looked around the room letting my gaze settle on Chase.

“Why does he look so much like me?” I questioned.

“What?”

“Chase. Why does he look so much like me?”I raised my voice as I questioned.

“There is no easy way to tell you this I’m just going to come out with it.You and Chase … are  brother and sister” he sighed heavily.

“What?” I said in shock. “oh my god. So that means I have a dad?”

“Yes”

“Well why isn’t  he here?”

“Because he recently died in a plane crash.”

“What!” I screamed a little too loud.

“Calm down.”
“Calm down? How can I calm down? You just told me my only father is dead!”

“Look I know this is hard, but I need you to calm down,”
he said more sternly this time.

“Look, I’m sorry that this has just come out of nowhere ,but you and Chase meeting was no accident. I need your help.”

“How!” I blurted, ”I can’t do anything you can’t do. I’m just a normal teenager!”

“On the contrary, you can do much more than any human being can do.”

“What are you talk-”

“So can Chase, he interrupted, ”You’ll need to work with Chase for this to work.”

“For what to work?” I asked.

Dr.James looked around the room, sighing. He ran his fingers through his hair and closed his eyes and gulped .

“There is a man his name, his The Man Of the West” He explained carefully

“Who?”

“The Man of the West” Dr.James repeated.”he is a powerful man who has gathered all of the evil forces in the world and is trying to take over the world. Right now. He attempted once before but failed. Do you know who defeated them? ”

I shook my head.

“Your parents,” Dr.James responded. “Since you and Chase are the only ones who have the powers to defeat The Man of the West. You have to do it or else the whole world is doomed.”

“What about my mom?” I asked

“What about her?”

“Can’t she find and defeat The Man of the West?”

“No. When your parents got married they were stripped of their powers… by me,” he added.

“What!”

I had to when two super heroes get married they have to give up their powers to prove how much their significant other is worth to them.”

“ Well if they’re so important to each other, why did they split up?”

“ They split up because they didn’t want you two finding out about your powers too early. You two are most strong and your powers are the most obvious when you are together. He took your brother, Chase, and your mom kept you to keep you both safe.”

I looked at Chase. He started to wake up and breathe

“ Chase!” My heart leaped with joy. But why? I didn’t even know him. He may be my brother by blood, but by heart he was a stranger to me.

“Ahem. I’m...glad you’re okay,” I said blandly.

That car crash seemed to  have taken its toll on Chase’s face. It seemed like his eyes were shut ,but they were as wide as he could possibly open them. It looked as if 1,000 hornets had stung each eye, and he had an allergic reaction to each and every sting.his lips looked like they had gotten into gang fights and lost every time.

“What are you doing here?” he asked weakly.

“We’re a team now aren’t we?” I answered.I looked to Dr.  James , then turned back to Chase. “Aren’t we, Brother?”

“ What do you mean,’ Brother’?” Chase stammered.

I explained to him what Dr.James had just shared with me.

Three  days later, Dr. James took us to an abandoned warehouse. The inside was as large as a stadium with dummies , suit displays, and weaponry .

“Woah!” Chase and I said in unison.

“This is where you’ll  be training,” Dr. James explained.“Meet me here in a week and we’ll begin training.”

“Here” Dr.James said as he handed me a one piece pitch black suit with leather combat boots.

“ Um …… Thanks” I responded  I went and got changed into my suit.(May I just add I was rocking that suit.)

When I met Chase in the training room James came out with a contraption that resembled a thermometer.

“Here,’’ he said ,”stick this in your ear”

“Alright” I agreed

I stuck the machine in my ear and it made a BEEP sound ,then I took it out and handed it to him.

“ Forcefield, ” He said.

“ So how do I use my powers, exactly?”

“ Hold on,let me get to Chase”

He went through the same process with Chase ,except he had the power to control the four elements.

“Okay, so powers” I demanded.

“You have the powers, if you can imagine it it will happen” He explained.

Chase went first a lush green vine bursted out of the ground as it  sprinted around the dummy  and slapped off its head.

“Whoa!”I exclaimed

Then I went,I imagined a magenta forcefield and purple force blasted from my arms and slammed the mannequin back into the wall.

After days of this, Chase was making tornados of sand and waves of water and I was blasting twenty dummies at once and dodging cannons.Dr.James smiled and nodded with satisfaction.

The day after we met early and he gave us our suits.I slapped my hair into a ponytail and put on my boots.I walked over to James and gave him a hug

“Thank you ”I whispered teary eyed.

“Enough tears let me introduce your ride!”he said.

He pointed to a black helicopter with a titanium propeller and a gleaming body.

“Well, don’t just stand there. Get in!”

With every little jolt or sound, the helicopter  seemed more and more like a death bed. Chase was on the verge of tears.

“Man up, Wuss!” Dr.James boomed.

I was scared straight, but I didn’t want to show it. I wasn’t going to be scared by a helicopter ride when the whole city of New York was depending on Chase and me to save them from chaos and destruction.

Dr.James flew us over the city of New York.

“Ready?” Chase quivered.

“Sure,” I sighed heavily.

We dropped down in the helicopter into the lively city. The streets were pure chaos with wild people screaming, horns honking madly, and fires dancing around from windows.

“You need to get to the Empire State Building,” Dr James demanded, “NOW!”

“Why do we need to get to the Empire State Building”I Questioned.

“The Man of the West uses the tallest point in the tcit to transport strong energy ” Dr.James explained.

The helicopter's landing skids were about to touch the ground when a ball of blinding golden light the size of an elephant came hurtling towards us.Before my brain could process anything ,a 16 foot wave tackled the ball.Unfortunately, another immense ball came rolling at us,faster than before.I tried to summon a force field ,but I wasn’t quick enough. The ball crashed into the side of the helicopter ,flipping it around as it went  crashing down.

I jumped out and tumbled down the cold black streets.

“ Gabby!” a voice called.

I saw Chase sprinting towards me,his ashy face filled with cuts and bruises.

“Woah!are you okay?” He asked

“Yeah,you?”I replied

The his face went blank and his eyes got weider.

“Woah! W..What happened?”He exclaimed looking at my knee

“What do you-”I said as I looked down at my knee and saw a big patch of red on my suit.I haven’t even noticed that my knee got burned. In fact it didn’t even hurt until he mentioned it.

“We have to get to safety!” Chase demanded

Then a man appeared out of thin air of black smoke  with a red v-neck and a leather jacket accompanied by torn  jeans and just for a millionth of a second I flinched

“I’m back,” He announced,”and there is no safety!”

“What do you mean,”I snapped confidently,”You can’t win!”

“Well,of course not,”he confessed,”Well ,as long as you two aren’t together”

“So you’re The Man of the West” I stated

“Thats right” he smirked

Then The Man of the West shot Chase up into the clouds. As Chase came back down his eyes were as big as saucers and his ghost white face,as he splashed hard into the ground

“Chase,no!” I screamed

Suddenly The Man of the West knocked me into the door that was behind me. As I hit my back my eyes rolled to my head as I lost all fight I had in me. The whole earth went dark.

The black smoke flooded my lungs and coursedthroughmy veins. Rasping for air, searching the cold ruins of the streets for my brother, Chase.  I limped to the strong depressing base as my cuts and stabs stung and burned.  At that second, I saw myself face to face with cold, vicious, red eyes. The Man of the West.

“Hello ….Gabrielle”He croaked in  his cold voice.

“What do you want!”I retorted .

Then I noticed glistening, lush, green ivy spread around in a spiral on his pitch black clothes.

“Chase!” I mumbled.

“W...what's happening to me,”The Man of the West cried.

“Gabby let’s go ”called a voice.

I recognized that voice. It was Chase. Then I saw his silhouette in the dark, black, gloomy smoke

“Come on, Gabby!” he yelled.

I sprinted toward him as we ran side by side in the cold harsh breeze with the sun lighting the way.The I heard a loud whistling sound followed by a flash of golden light.I tried to hold up a forcefield but I was too weak and the golden light pushed me back tumbling over the ravine and onto the cold hard ground.

THE END
