Three Rules

Funny; you must have tossed and turned a lot last night. The glass of water you put next to your bed is right the way across the other side of the room, its contents spilt everywhere.

And how come there’s only a crust of that sandwich left? You’d made it last night, but you were certain you’d left it there for the morning. You’d known you were going to wake up starving, after all. The rats must be back. Damn! You’d have to put more poison down and prepare for the stench as they rotted inside your walls.

Putting your feet down onto the ground you fight off the dizziness that instantly hits. Just give yourself a minute. That’s it, a deep breath and you’re up, able to stagger your way across to the bathroom. You’ll scrub your teeth while you’re in there, try to get rid of that dry, bottom of a bird-cage, feel before you make your way to the kitchen for your caffeine hit.

What is Gizmo doing on the floor? You pick up the mogwai toy, the only remnant of your childhood that you’ve kept. And it’s guts are leaking across the floor....Must have been the rats that have torn it apart. You toss it onto the chair. Maybe your Mom will be able to mend it some time.

Strange noises are coming from behind the closed door of the kitchen. Tapping feet, high-pitched laughter, screams and shrieks. The TV must have been left on -- that’s the only explanation you can think of. Sure sounds like the banging and crashing’s inside the room, though.

You shake your head, vow you won’t ever drink so much again, and push the door open. It is silent, still. There’s nothing there. And the TV’s most definitely off. Someone must have spiked it, your drink; what else could it be!

Finger on the light switch, you press it down and the whole room erupts in light, noise, and scaly little green monsters......Gremlins! Mogwai, water, food after midnight – it’s all starting to fall in to place.

Too late now though. You’ve figured it out and that electric carving knife is starting up and getting ever closer. There’s a sea of vicious creatures between you and that door. If you could just get nearer......Arrghhh!
