The Matrix is a simulated reality created by sentient machines to subdue the human population, while their bodies' heat and electrical activity are used as an energy source.

Neo is a computer programmer who learned this truth and is drawn into a rebellion against the machines, which involves other people who have been freed from the "dream world. He believes something is wrong with the world and is puzzled by repeated online encounters with the cryptic phrase "the Matrix". Trinity contacts him, saying that a man named Morpheus can explain its meaning. But Neo, impatient, can't help asking her.

Neo: "What is the Matrix?"

Trinity: "The answer is out there, Neo. It's looking for you, and it will find you if you want it to."

However, the Agents, led by Agent Smith, apprehend Neo at his office and ask him to help them capture Morpheus, whom they call a terrorist.

Agent Smith: "We're willing to wipe the slate clean, give you a fresh start. All that we're asking in return is your cooperation in bringing a known terrorist to justice."

Somehow Neo managed to escape from the agents and meet Morpheus who gives him the choice between the truth and ignorance.

Morpheus: "This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."

Of course Neo choose the right pill, the red pill. An ugly truth is always better than a beautiful lie. We are on earth to learn the truth. If not, there would be no point to live. We could go straight from birth to grave. And maybe some people, like me, would choose the fast way if given the choice.

Morpheus explains that, in the early 21st century, intelligent machines waged a war against the humans that created them. The Matrix is a shared simulation of the world as it was in 1999 in which the minds of the harvested humans are trapped and pacified.

And when Neo asks him about the Matrix, Morpheus answers:

Morpheus: "Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself. I'm trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through it."

The group (Morpheus' men, Neo and Trinity) enters the Matrix to visit the Oracle, a prophet who predicted the emergence of the One. Once Neo finds her, she tells him.

Oracle: "I'd ask you to sit down, but, you're not going to anyway. And don't worry about the vase."

The vase breaking, indicates predestination vs. destiny. It broke, and nothing really happened.

Before they can leave the Matrix, the group is ambushed by Agents and tactical police. Morpheus allows himself to be captured so Neo and the rest of the crew can escape. In the Matrix, the Agents interrogate Morpheus in an attempt to learn his access codes to the mainframe computer in Zion, the rebel humans' last refuge in the real world, but Morpheus wouldn't talk. So, Agent Smith tells him about the Matrix, evolution, and the future.

Agent Smith: "Have you ever stood and stared at it, marveled at its beauty, its genius? Billions of people just living out their lives, oblivious. Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world, where none suffered, where everyone would be happy? It was a disaster. No one would accept the program, entire crops were lost. Some believed we lacked the programming language to describe your perfect world, but I believe that, as a species, human beings define their reality through misery and suffering. The perfect world was a dream that your primitive cerebrum kept trying to wake up from. Which is why the Matrix was redesigned to this, the peak of your civilization. I say your civilization, because as soon as we started thinking for you, it really became our civilization, which is of course what this is all about. Evolution, Morpheus, evolution. Like the dinosaur. Look out that window. You've had your time. The future is our world, Morpheus. The future is our time."

Neo, who believes that he is not the One, resolves to return to the Matrix to rescue Morpheus; Trinity insists on accompanying him. They rescue Morpheus. Morpheus and Trinity exit the Matrix, but Smith blocks Neo's escape. When they were about to meet inside the Matrix, Neo said before he could see Agent Smith, knowing he could hear him.

Neo: "I know you're out there. I can feel you now. I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin. I'm going to hang up this phone, and then I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a world without you. A world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries. A world where anything is possible. Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you."

When Agent Smith finally appears in front of Neo, he shares a revelation before trying to kill him.

Agent Smith: "I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure."

So, they want to kill each others for different reasons:

Neo: for showing people a world without rules and control, without borders and boundaries, where anything is possible

Agent Smith: for a world without virus, disease, cancer and plague, without human beings

Neo should have asked Agent Smith about the Matrix cause he knows about it. But Neo thought he didn't know. And when Agent Smith was killed, it was too late for asking. It doesn't matter cause Agent Smith told Morpheus about the Matrix: a perfect human world, where none suffered, where everyone would be happy.

"So, goodnight Neo. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake by Agent Smith, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven, the Matrix."
