FADE IN: INT. TOLSTOY SPACESHIP, BACK SURFACE – UNKNOWN TIME

A man, LEVIN MASHKOV, sits and watches Earth from the window. Approaching footsteps belonging to VICTOR AKUNIN join his partner, carrying two trays of food.

VICTOR
(in Russian)
How are you doing?

LEVIN
(in Russian)
I can’t believe I’m finally going back.

VICTOR
(hands his friend a tray)
Depressed, disappointed, or excited?

LEVIN
A little bit of many things, I suppose.

VICTOR Take one last good view. Not many people get to see that in a lifetime.

LEVIN
(eating)
Don’t you think we’ve seen it enough times?

They share a laugh.

LEVIN
You know, I don’t remember my mom asking me what I wanted to grow up to be as a kid, but I’m sure if I had said astronaut, she would laughed it off.

VICTOR
Well, who’s laughing now?

LEVIN
Well…

VICTOR
(raises his arm to silence him)
Did you hear something?

LEVIN
(alarmed)
W-What? (turns, stands up, and stares at the well-lit hallway) What is it?

Victor doesn’t respond and they cautiously walk ahead. As they turn the corner, nothing I there. VICTOR
Sorry, must have been me.

LEVIN
You sure?

VICTOR
(annoyed) Yes! I’ll exercise. Could you check on the plants?

LEVIN
Sure.

INT. TOLSTOY SPACESHIP, GYM – UNKNOWN TIME

Victor, still anxious, exercises to relieve the tension.

INT. TOLSTOY SPACESHIP, GREENHOUSE – UNKNOWN TIME

Levin waters the plants. He considers turning off the lights, but hesitantly steps back.

INT. TOLSTOY SPACESHIP, FRONT HANGER – UNKOWN TIME

Victor and Levin reunite and take their seats.

VICTOR
(checking the controls)
Everything in order. You checked the back?

LEVIN
Yep.

VICTOR
Everything in order?

LEVIN
Yep.

VICTOR
When we’re done, we get our wives and have our private toast.

LEVIN
If you survive the first glass.

Victor suddenly turns his head.

VICTOR
(alarmed)
You heard something?

LEVIN
(annoyed)
What is it now?

VICTOR
You sure that you checked the back?

LEVIN
Look, I’m telling you, there’s…

A tentacle drops from the roof and bonds to Levin’s arm. Levin screams and frantically shakes and kicks at the controls. Meanwhile, Victor, who was caught by surprise, falls on the ground and finds himself levitating. Levin, desperate to get the creature off of him, presses several buttons in his arm and electrocutes the creatures, throwing it off. It crawls away, presumably escaping. An enraged Levin tries to chase it, but the spacecraft starts shaking and turning over. The two astronauts can’t say or do anything but scream as the spacecraft keeps falling and the scenery shifts per second, waves and pictures of the sun and the skies speeding through their eyes. Suddenly, it all comes to a halt. Levin regaining conscious, turns on the anti-gravity switch, and his slams onto the window. Looking outside, he looks outside.

EXT. U.S.A., SUBURBIA – DAY

The spacecraft is held in one hand by SOL, an Aryan in a unique outfit.

LEVIN
(awed)
Sol!

She salutes him.

CUT TO: INT. S.Y.M.P.A.N. INC, HOSPITAL – DAY

Levin and Victor and having their eyes checked by ELIZABETH, the head of the corporation. A British woman with androgynous features and different eye colors, she maintains a calm face in spite of the fantastic circumstances. Her assistant is a dwarf named ANTHONY, scribbling down notes.

ELIZABETH
(in English)
Are your brain chips in check, gentlemen?

LEVIN & VICTOR
(in Russian)
Yes.

ELIZABETH
Good. External injuries non-withstanding, there is no long standing mental damage. (to somebody outside) You can come in.

Sol walks in with a welcoming smile. She shakes hand with the astronauts.

SOL
(in German)
Welcome back to Earth, gentlemen. I’m sorry that your landing has been less than graceful.

VICTOR
You saved us; that’s enough for me. Thank you.

LEVIN
Yes, thank you.

SOL
I see you brought a friend along.

LEVIN
(confused)
Friend?

ELIZABETH
Please, follow us.

INT. S.Y.M.P.A.N. INC, LAB – DAY

They enter a lab populated by people from different nationalities, religions, and genders working together on different experiments and inventions that are only limited by their imagination. The four walk to a cage where the tentacle creature jumps at the glass, startling Levin.

LEVIN
You caught it?!

SOL
She came along.

LEVIN
She?

ELIZABETH
From planet No. 4,135, we have Nytt, skin color purple, four feet tall, descendant of newer but relatively small species, short lifespan expected for 10 months maximum, endangered, despite abilities similar to a chameleon’s, and an herbivore that seems to have taken a liking to your greenhouse, Mr. Mashkov.

LEVIN
But-but it attacked me!

ELIZABETH
Actually, it was shaking hands with you. (hands Sol a leaf) Do you wish to do the honor?

SOL
(tossing the leaf)
Here you go, little one!

The creatures crawls about and yanks the falling leaf with one of its tentacles and sucks the leaf till it turns yellow.

LEVIN
So, what are you going to do with it?

ELIZABETH
Keep it in safe and sound. We’ve poked it quite enough for today. In the meantime, please make yourselves at home. Your wives have been reported of your safe arrivals. Congratulations on your mission, gentlemen.

VICTOR
We wish to thank you for your company’s contribution as well, Professor.

ELIZABETH
It’s a simple request as it could ever be. Robert, please escort these gentlemen to their headquarters.

They are escorted while Sol and Elizabeth stay by and observe the creature. Sol is hesitant, and Elizabeth catches up.

ELIZABETH
Yes?

SOL
How much has it got?

ELIZABETH
A week.

There is a montage of Levin and Victor embracing their wives while being surrounded by a crowd composed of the press.

CUT TO: EXT. RESIDENCE, GARDEN – NIGHT

Husbands and wives having a toast.

ELIZABETH (V.O.)
It wasn’t shaking his arm. Probably just desperate for help. I could be wrong, of course.

SOL (V.O.)
You think it even wants to stay here?

ELIZABETH (V.O.)
Even if it doesn’t, it won’t have much time. SOL (V.O.) It’s not very fair, Elizabeth. Poor thing is still a kid.

ELIZABETH (V.O.)
That’s life for you.

THE END
