“Rooms”

He settled back

into a beat-up

Lazy-boy chair

the handle

that raised

the footrest

was missing

and had been

replaced

by a pair of

vice grips.

His roommate

was having friends

Over,

It was Friday afternoon

they both had

the next two days

Off

but he wasn’t

feeling it

Today

so he retreated

to his room

and sealed off

the rest of the

outside world,

He had days

where everything

just felt

too much

an overload

to his senses

Today

was one of them.

He wasn’t

Depressed

Lonely

or Sad

but he did know

once he shut

that door

and he had

all four walls

protecting him

from all the

unwanted thoughts

clouding his mind

He would get a

sense of calm

allowing his mind

to open up,

Showing him rooms

Their

that would be

Locked

and inaccessible

to him

at any other

Place.

He would find

Himself

blindly looking out

the window

as he went from

room to room

in his mind

checking door

after door

hoping to find

the kind of

wonders and

imaginary

locked away

in his semi- conscious

mind

that he could

only get to

when he was

safely locked away

in his

Room.

He would pull

out his pen

open up his

notebook

turn to a

completely blank

Page,

And then he would

begin to try

and straddle

that fine line

between the

semi-conscious

World

and conscious

One.

Looking for unlocked

Doors

to unexplored

Rooms

and when he

finds one,

he would enter

armed

only with

a 39-cent

black pen.

He sees a door

up ahead

bright light

streaming out

from all around it

he puts his

Shoulder

up against it

as he turns the

Knob

and tumbles into

the room.

He finds himself,

Watching her

as she throws

freshly washed

Linens

over a clothes line

her light summer

Dress

softly blowing

in the wind

the mid-morning

Sun

shining brightly

behind her

showing a full

Silhouette

of her form,

As the strong

rays of light

at times

make the summer

Dress

seem to disappear.

He wants to

look away

feeling guilty

for turning

such an innocent

Scene

into something

More

but she has

such unspoken

natural beauty

that instead

he starts to

move closer.

He is down wind

of her

as he approaches

the light breeze

bringing him

the smell of

salt from the

Sea

and her body

mixed faintly with

her perfume.

He’s much closer

Now

afraid he’ll

frighten her

he calls out

to her,

As she turns

to the sound

of his voice

a sudden gust

of wind

blows the sheets

Up,

Momentarily

blocking his view

and as the wind

Dies

and the sheets

Settle

she is gone.

He hears the

Sound

of a door

Slamming shut

as everything around

Him

starts to dissolve.

He crosses back

Over

to the conscious

World

and finds himself

looking down

at the still blank

page,

he begins to

Write,

“The sun accented”

“Her natural”

“Beauty”

Trying to hold on to

his semi-conscious

Day Dream

as he transfers it

with his 39-cent

black pen

to the page

before him,

An hour later

the summer breeze

in the beautiful girl’s

World

has taken hold,

As he dots

the final period

behind her world’s

setting sun.

He hears a girl’s

Laughter

coming from

the other room

he gets out

of his chair

puts on a clean

Shirt

as he’s drawn

to the female

frolicking

just outside of his

door

and as he

Opens

his door

unsealing his

Room

from the outside

world

the faint smell of

perfume

and

salt from the

Sea

drift into his

Room

and a girl

he’s never met

but feels like

he knows

looks up

from her

beer,

and Smiles…
