Anyone For Tennis

I know you want to play this game,

but I’m not really willing;

a match of verbal tennis

is to me so far from thrilling.

You’ll line it up, that opening shot,

just to get your measure,

the reaction of others around

is something that you treasure.

Will I make a swift return,

lob that snide remark right back?

Or will it be a point to you?

I know I won’t keep track.

Now you’re getting in to pace,

you’re finding the perfect swing,

knocking up so many points

with the reactions that you bring.

The audience are spellbound,

you know how to make them smile,

an out-loud laugh, they’re on your side,

you are now winning by a mile.

Each time I make an effort,

and knock it back across the net,

I know that there’ll be worse to come,

and it’s an action I’ll regret.

I am really tiring with the effort of this game,

I’m going to concede defeat to you

for in this game of verbal tennis

I will forever lose, it’s true.

I don’t want to play this game again,

it’s really far from fun

when it always gets turned in to

two or more taking on one.
