Most of the time, we wear masks for people. Sometimes those masks destroy us inside, but we keep wearing them.

I wear this mask for you.

You smile and say

Everything is alright,

But I'm dying every night.

Having adorned it for so long,

My skin has fused to the inside.

Underneath, I've begun to decay.

But I keep it on in the hopes you'll stay.

When I'm in solitude,

I pick at the carrion.

Pieces of me fall to the floor,

But I'm so scared you'll walk out the door.

I wear this mask for you.

You smile back at it.

You love what you see,

But could you ever love me?

You'll never see my face,

As I continue to dance in this masquerade.

At the end of the night, when I'm alone,

I look into the mirror and see only bone.

I wear this mask for you.

You're happy with what you see.

I'm falling apart, but that's okay —

Anything to make you stay.
