After the battle, Shikamaru and Temari sat on a large branch that protruded from a tall tree. The moon was full that night, and the stars appeared to be what looked like diamonds scattered in the dark, velvety blanket of the night.

After what seemed to be half of an eternity, Shikamaru broke the silence. "Thanks," Temari gave him a confused glance. "For what you did back there."

For Temari, it seemed as if each word was being forced out of his mouth. Nevertheless, she listened, as she knew it wasn't like him to thank people like this. Especially not her.

"No problem," she said, giving him her signature forced smile. After that, there was yet another silence, and it remained that way for quite some time. Temari found herself moving an inch closer to the person she had just saved.

"Are you always like this?"

"Like what?"

"Oh, I don't know. Bored. Dissatisfied. Disapproving. Judgemental. Solitary. Any of those sound familiar?"

"Yeah. Most of the time." He paused. "What, what's with that look?"

Temari was smiling at him, however, it was a different kind of smile. Not one of her tight, curt smiles, but one that even felt unfamiliar to her.

"You're cute."

Shikamaru felt his ears burn. "C-cute?"

She moved another inch closer to him. "Yeah. You heard me right. Want me to say it again?"

Shikamaru stiffened.

"You're cute."

Shikamaru thought he would fall off of the tree. But oddly enough, he found himself moving closer to her. "Oh yeah? What would you say if I told you that you were cute?"

She playfully punched his shoulder. "I don't know. But I know my ears wouldn't go as red as yours did."

Shikamaru glared at her. "You-" He was just about to finish his sentence until he felt a soft peck on his right cheek.

"Goodnight, Crybaby."

And then she left.

Shikamaru put his hand to his cheek. "G-goodnight," he said, slowly. Rising to his feet, he smirked. "How troublesome." And then he set off to the village.
