I imagined I first found you in a neglected corner of my eye, and you were a curious thing, not simply striking—but tragic in a way invisible to the casual eye

There must have been weight like that of the world, yet more trivial, hung upon your shoulders

I imagined I was the only one to take notice, and also the only one who could possibly release you from your bonds

However, I was disinclined to such measures, because then—you would cease to hold my interest

I imagined you were an intelligent charmer, but imperceptibly cruel to the peons you entertained

It intrigued me how often they flocked around, and how in their midst you seemed a butterfly among maggots

I imagined your hobby was being pretentious, and you smiled for the sport of seeing them swoon

I was highly amused as you picked from the crowd a simpleton beneath you to be your pet

I imagined they felt privileged to lick at your feet, and they savored the air expelled through your lips

How insipid they are—the dregs soaking in your grace

I imagined I’d suit you better than those puppets on your strings; after all, when toys get old—then you must have a new game to play

I’m sure I could hold your interest; I know I could make your day

I imagined I caught your glance, and then you looked away

And so it all begins—the chase I do adore

I imagined you’re just like me, and I could never stand the bore

You shuffle the cards just so, and I watch you from behind

I imagined you’d be erratic, but you’re habitual with your time

You divvy your hours well; you wear the skin of a socialite

I imagined you enjoy the feel of manipulating through massive circles

Never mind the lack of challenge each salacious one presents; it’s repetitive, but great fun to always get your way

I imagined I’d thrill you more as you carried on your pursuits; it occurred to me we’d yet to meet, and engage in our battle of wills

I wondered who was stronger as you turned in for the night; and I watched you through your window as the jealous moon bathed your skin in light

I imagined you felt I was there, and that somehow I slipped in your dreams

I imagined you knew me quite well—but then nothing is quite as it seems
