Are you searching for happiness? What will it look and feel like when you find it, where are you looking, what exactly is it that you are looking for?

“I just want to be happy,” I hear this being said very often and many of my clients list “to be happy” when they write out their goals. When asked to describe what happy is people give different answers.

The dictionary states, “happy - feeling or showing pleasure or contentment.”

People talk about looking for happiness as if it is something tangible that is out there to be tracked down. People say “when I have money I will be happy” or “when I lose weight I will be happy.” Unfortunately you cannot find happiness this way.

When the bills are paid, your stomach is full and you have a roof over your head it is easy to say you are happy and, to others you look happy too, but is that true happiness or the lack of worry?

I honestly believe that to be truly happy you need to do the following.

  • Accept who you are and take full responsibility for your life. Stop blaming everyone and everything, take back your power and become your own personal leader.
  • See people as individuals, get to know them and do not generalise. If all girls were really bitches and all guys were really narcissistic bastards we would all be in big trouble.
  • Find out what you truly love to do and do it. Life is too short to spend 50% of your time doing things that you do not enjoy.
  • Get into good physical shape. Fatness, (non medical) just like laziness is a choice. It costs nothing to eat better and to walk, or run. You can do push ups and sit ups at home or in the local park. When you look good you feel good. When you feel good inside you are more confident.
  • Live by principals and stand for something.
  • Listen more then you speak. We learn when we listen, we engage people on a deeper level when we listen. Listen with the intent to understand and not to answer.
  • Avoid negativity at all costs. That includes negative people situations and most importantly your internal dialogue!
  • Give more than you take, helping others is the most important thing you will ever do in your life. Give and forget, receive and always remember.
  • Get up early. There are only so many hours in a day and you have a limited amount of time on earth so get up early and create more time for yourself.
  • Learn from other people but do not try to become them. You are unique so be yourself.
  • Surround yourself with positive people and people who have attained more and who have more life experience. That way you will have good influences and have examples right in front of you.
  • Set goals and live in the present. What you achieve right now is important, do not put off for tomorrow what you can do today.
  • Take chances and calculated risks; get right out of your comfort zone. The only thing holding you back s fear of failure. Fear kills dreams and hopes. Stop being fearful and become fearless.
  • Smile more. Even if you are on your own or sitting on a bicycle in the gym, smile; it makes you feel good and you look happy!

 

Understand that you are in control of your own happiness, no one or nothing else is.
Stop searching for it and create your own.
