Panel 3: Alfred looks at Ben as he still looks up at the statue.

BEN WAYNE

I promise you Alfred, the Wayne family will make sure that the decent people of Gotham will never half to be afraid again. They'll see that they don't need the Batman to feel safe.

ALFRED

Your father did not only protect the people of Gotham Master Wayne, he was a symbol meant to inspire them.

BEN WAYNE

Alfred, he inspired all the wrong people sometimes. Gotham needs police, not a vigilante.

Panel 4: Alfred returns to watering the plants as Ben walks out of the room.

And Alfred.

ALFRED

What Master Wayne?

BEN WAYNE

I promise you, things in Gotham are only going to get better from here.

ALFRED

That remains to be seen.

BEN WAYNE

Off to Gotham.

Panel 3: Alice looks at Ben as he starts the car.

Alice Becket

No offense Ben, but I think Gotham is kind of, I don't know, yucky.

Panel 4: Ben looks at her with a blank expression on his face as she smiles.

BEN WAYNE

How about we don't talk until we get to Gotham Plaza Alice.

INT. Michelle's roomseconds later

NARRATOR

Her purpose, like the former master of this manor, is vengeance.

EXT. Gothamnight

Panel 1: The gloomy, rundown city of Gotham under a night sky full of stars.

Panel 2: A street in downtown Gotham, Ben and Alice sit in the red sports car as it races past traffic. There on dilapidated buildings on either side of the street as pedestrians walk along on the sidewalks.

Panel 3: A close up image of Ben's face as he looks at something, he is frowning.

Panel 4: On the front of the building is a young punk dressed in leather who is writing graffiti on the side of a building with a can of spray paint. It says, "Without the Bat, We own the night."

EXT. Gotham plazalater

Panel 1: In downtown Gotham is Gotham Plaza, a large building of modern architecture among other more dreary buildings. In front of the doors is a red carpet with crowds to either side behind a barricade. Men in tuxedos and women in dresses are walking toward the front doors of the plaza.

ALICE BECKET

I hope these is going to be fun Ben.

BEN WAYNE

Sure baby, but just remember to look pretty.

INT. Gotham plazalater

Panel 1: Within the plaza is a large room which is full of the rich and influential of Gotham, dressed up for the night. Some are dancing while others stand in groups and talk. On a stage is a string quarter who play instruments. Along one side of the room is a long table with plates of food on it. In the center of the room is an ice sculpture of a swan.

Panel 2: A group of men in tuxedos stand in a circle in the room and are talking. With them is Ben, holding a glass of scotch, who is grinning. Also with them is Bill Taylor, Bill is a portly man with a thinning hairline and he holds a glass of wine.

bill Taylor

So how has Ben Wayne been keeping busy?

BEN WAYNE

Actually read that book you suggested Bill, you know the one about the visionary architect who blows up his own building because he does not like the vestibule someone added to it.

BILL TAYLOR

Did you like it?

Panel 3: Bill looks at Ben as he is about to drink from his glass.

BEN WAYNE

Gave be an idea actually. At the headquarters of Wayne Tech, there is a guy selling corn dogs in front of the doors. Think I'll blow it up.

Panel 4: Bill bursts out into laughter as Ben looks at him and grins.

BEN WAYNE

Old Bill Taylor, when he is not around at Gotham country club we always talk about how old Bill stole that software application that made him rich from a roommate at college. Guess there is some homeless guy in Gotham telling the other vagabonds that wishes in school he had a password on his computer.

BILL TAYLOR

No one ever got rich by being honest.

Panel 5: Ben looks at his glass as he is about to drink from it.

BEN WAYNE

I got rich the honest way like the past seven Wayne's before me, I inherited it from dead parents.

Panel 7: Standing at a table putting food on a plate he holds is Lucius Fox, an elderly black man in a tuxedo. Ben is walking up behind him.

BEN WAYNE

How's the food Lucius?

Lucius fox

What ever they paid the caterer, it was to much.

Panel 8: Ben and Lucius are facing each other.

BEN WAYNE

So how is that special project I put you on going?

LUCIUS FOX

I've found a way to reduce the cost of manufacturing the body armor your father used. We should be able to outfit the Gotham P.D. soon.

BEN WAYNE

Is that it Lucius?

Panel 9: Lucius turns back to the table and resumes putting food on his plate as Ben looks at him.

LUCIUS FOX

I've also come up with alternate versions of all your father's non-lethal tools, but this won't be a very profitable venture for the Wayne company.

BEN WAYNE

We'll not worry about profit, just making Gotham safe and the police the best equipped department in the country.

LUCIUS FOX

The new commissioner Gordon should appreciate your contribution.

Panel 10: Ben is looking over his shoulder at something.

BEN WAYNE

Speak of the devil.

Panel 11: Standing in front of the ice sculpture among the dancing couples is Commissioner Barbra Gordon. She is in a police uniform, has long red hair and has on glasses.

Panel 12: Ben is walking up to Barbra and is grinning.

BEN WAYNE

It's been forever commissioner Gordon.

Barbra Gordon

Still does not seem long enough Mr. Wayne.

Panel 13: They stand in front of each other and look and one another with the sculpture behind them, Ben grins though she is frowning.

BARBRA GORDON

Guess I should thank Lucius for Wayne Tech's contribution to the department.

BEN WAYNE

It is just the beginning.

BARBRA GORDON

So what vapid bimbo is hanging on your arm this time Ben?

Panel 14: Ben speaks and does not notice Alice walking up behind him.

BEN WAYNE

Actually, she said Gotham was yucky. Is that something a vapid person would say Barbra?

ALICE BECKET

Vapid?

Panel 15: Ben and Barbra watch as Alice walks away in tears.

BEN WAYNE

One, she wasn't that vapid because she knew what vapid meant. And two, thanks, soon every super model is going to think I'm a heartless bastard.

BARBRA GORDON

And they would be right.

Panel 16: Barbra turns to walk away as Ben looks at her.

BEN WAYNE

Could we have a moment alone on the balcony commissioner?

BARBRA GORDON

Not if my life depended on it Ben.

BEN WAYNE

If you don't come out on the balcony with me I'll yell Barbra Gordon used to be Batgirl.

Panel 17: Barbra is looking at Ben and is frowning as he grins.

BEN WAYNE

You know I'll do it Barb.

EXT. Gotham plaza balconylater

Panel 1: On the top floor of Gotham Plaza is a balcony, the barren city is far below it. Ben, who still holds the glass of scotch, and Barbara stand on the balcony and look at the city below.

BARBRA GORDON

What do you need to talk about Ben?

BEN WAYNE

About that date five years ago. I fly you to Paris, pay to have the Eiffel tower empty for us and we had that great night together. Then the next morning you tell me you never want to see me again.

Panel 2: Barbra looks down on the city as Ben looks at her.

BARBRA GORDON

That night, I thought you where like you father. A brave, selfless man who would give anything including his life for this city; you hid behind the identity of the arrogant playboy.

BEN WAYNE

Are you trying to say something Barb?

Panel 3: A close up image of Barbra's face, the reflection of the city of Gotham far below in her glasses.

BARBRA GORDON

After that night together, I realized that you where not your father. He was a great man who disguised himself as an arrogant billionaire. But you Ben, there is nothing behind the arrogant playboy. You are just a very shallow, very arrogant man who will never be the man his father was.

Panel 4: Ben looks at Barbra as she looks away.

BEN WAYNE

Do you know how much money I'm going to sink into the Gotham police?

BARBRA GORDON

Gotham needs the police, they also need a symbol to believe in; someone that men like the Joker know will always beat them.

BEN WAYNE

Barbra, notice that before the Batman there weren't any costumed maniacs terrorizing this city. I'll protect this city better then Bruce Wayne ever did.

Panel 5: Ben, who frowns, watches as Barbra walks towards the interior of the plaza and the party.

BEN WAYNE

Going somewhere commissioner?

BARBRA GORDON

I need some time to myself, and you are right.

BEN WAYNE

Right about what?

BARBRA GORDON

Ben Wayne is a heartless bastard.

Panel 6: Ben looks at the door Barbra just walked through, glass still in his hand.

Panel 7: An image of Ben's hand and he squeezes the glass with enough force that the glass shatters.

Panel 8: Ben looks down at his hand, now there are many cuts on his hand which bleeds.

NARRATOR

He is numb to the pain and just looks at the blood flowing from his hand. Numb to the pain, also numb to his heart and soul.

Panel 9: Ben reaches into his pocket, the ring tone of his phone plays a song.

Ben's Phone

"I wish I could fly, I wish I could touch the sky."

Panel 10: Ben holds the phone to his ear and speaks into it.

BEN WAYNE

Not the best time Kenny boy.

ext. the cliffseconds later

Panel One: Ken Kent, dressed in white shirt and jeans, stands on the cliff with the Kent farm far behind him. It is night. He holds a phone and speaks into it as Ben's voice comes out of the phone.

KEN KENT

Something wrong Ben?

BEN WAYNE

Nothing accept the ice princess still is giving me the cold shoulder. The only joy in life I got these days is coming up with amusing ring tones for my friends which I don't have many of.

EXT. GOTHAM PLAZA BALCONYseconds later

Panel 1: Ben leans on the railing of the balcony and looks down on the city as he speaks into the phone.

BEN WAYNE

I'm trying my best here to help Gotham Ken, but sometimes I feel like I have no purpose anymore. Like nothing really matters.

KEN KENT

Why don't you tell Barbra how you feel about her?

BEN WAYNE

I don't the ice queen would care.

KEN KENT

Can I ask you something Ben?

EXT. CLIFFSECONDS LATER

Panel 1: Ken looks over the edge of the cliff as he speaks on the phone.

BEN WAYNE

What buddy?

KEN KENT

I'll ask some other time Ben.

BEN WAYNE

I've known since that summer we spent together as kids what you have been trying over ten years to work up the nerve to ask me. And when you do, I'll tell you want you want to hear Kenny boy.

EXT. GOTHAM PLAZA BALCONYSECONDS LATER

Panel 1: Ben looks down on the city as he speaks on the phone.

KEN KENT

We can talk later Ben.

BEN WAYNE

Thanks for the call buddy.

Panel 2: Ben looks up at the sky and is frowning.

EXT. WAYNE MANORlater

Panel 1: Wayne manor sits under the night sky as Ben, in his red sport's car, races towards the mansion.

INT. WAYNE MANOR barlater

Panel 1: Within the manor is a large room with a bar to one end and several leather chairs about and some paintings on the wall. Ben stands at the bar and drinks from a glass of scotch, his hand is bandaged.

Panel 2: Suddenly the lights in the room go out and the room is darkened. Though Ben's darkened silhouette can be seen.

NARRATOR

Some have an instinct to know when their life is threatened. And most would be lost in a world devoid of light unable to see.

Panel 3: An image of Ben's face in the darkness which can vaguely be seen.

NARRATOR

But some see more clearly in a world of darkness without light.

BEN WAYNE

Make your move.

Panel 4: An image in the darkened room of a feet running across the floor.

Panel 5: Ben dodges to the left as a feminine figure dressed in black swings down a sword as it buries itself into the bar which vaguely can be seen.

Panel 6: Ben backs up as the figure pulls the sword from the bar.

BEN WAYNE

Mom always said that in a fight, well, letting your opponent make the first move gives you the advantage.

Panel 7: The figure charges towards Ben with the sword raised over her head.

BEN WAYNE

When on the offense, you tend to give away your attack.

Panel 8: Ben does a quick sweep kick which knocks the attacker of their feet.

BEN WAYNE

And when on the defense, well; you tend to fight a lot better.

Panel 9: Ben pins down the arm the attacker which holds the sword as he looks down on them in the darkened room.

BEN WAYNE

Emergency lights.

Panel 10: The room is full of light now. Ben looks down at Michelle, who is on the ground and dressed in black garments as he pins down her arm with his foot.

BEN WAYNE

I would have thought you where a disgruntled employee, but snuffing out the lights. Something tells me you belong to that certain secret fraternity that old mom did. So what does the League of Assassins want with me?

Panel 11: Ben walks back to the bar with his glass and drinks from it as Michelle gets up.

MICHELLE YU

I am Vengeful Blade. Bodyguard and left hand of Ra's Al Ghul.

BEN WAYNE

Vengeful Blade, guess I would be heartless bastard. Glad to make your acquaintance.

MICHELLE YU

I must inform you that Talia Al Ghul is dead.

BEN WAYNE

Forgive me if I don't shed a few tears for mother.

Panel 12: Ben drinks from his glass as Michelle kneels and looks to the floor.

MICHELLE YU

You know are leader of the League of Assassins. I have be sent to protect you and know be your hand.

BEN WAYNE

So why the attempt to kill me?

MICHELLE YU

To prove you are worthy.

Panel 13: Ben looks at her as she kneels.

BEN WAYNE

Well, guess you know about that year as a kid that my father sent me to the Leagues little monastery to train with mom. Of course Talia made me promise to tell him that Ra's Al Ghul was not still alive. Still remember all the beatings.

MICHELLE YU

Before his death, Ra's said that he saw past your arrogant disguise, and said that he saw the truth in your eyes.

Panel 14: Ben looks at the glass as Michelle looks at him.

BEN WAYNE

What truth?

MICHELLE YU

That you had the eyes of a ice blooded killer, that he knew in your veins flowed blood so cold that if you ever slit them it could freeze the entire world.

BEN WAYNE

Why I love the League, really uplifting stuff as usual.

Panel 15: Michelle stands, blade in hand and faces Ben who looks at her.

MICHELLE YU

I will guard you with my life and am your means to give orders to the League of Assassins.

BEN WAYNE

Fine. If I ever need them, I'll let you know. And worry more about using that fabric softener I like when washing my clothes.

Panel 16: Ben walks towards the entrance of the room as she watches.

BEN WAYNE

Anyways, it is going to be a really boring assignment Vengeful Blade.

MICHELLE YU

I will protect you regardless. I and my blade will kill anyone who ever tries to harm you.

BEN WAYNE

Worry more about the fabric softener.

INT. WAYNE MANOR hallway  seconds later

Panel 1: Ben walks out into a hallway, with paintings on the wall, and finds Alfred waiting for him. Alfred is frowning.

ALFRED

I hope what Ra's Al Ghul was wrong.

BEN WAYNE

Wrong about what?

ALFRED

That the boy who I practically raised is a killer.

BEN WAYNE

I've never killed anyone in my life Alfred. I'm not going to start now.

Panel 2: Ben watches as Alfred walks away.

ALFRED

I would ask you to fire her, but I know you won't since you halve suffered from boredom for the past many months and she amuses you. Just promise me you will be careful.

BEN WAYNE

Don't worry, I'll be careful.

Panel 3: Ben looks down at his bandaged hand, blood stains the bandages. Behind Ben is the shadow of Batman, the bat insignia on the chest.

NARRATOR

He is not aware that in his heart, the shadows beckon. He looks at the blood flowing from his hand and he does not know that soon, his hands will be drenched in blood.
