"Please know that I can’t take suffering anymore, mom and dad you both want me to be something I’m not and that’s not fair, I find myself forcing a smile whenever I’m around either one of you. And you’re right I might not be a likeable person but at least there’s one person who cares about me, even when he’s angry I know that the words he says to me are not from his heart. Carson please you must continue to live for the both of us now, I tried to strong for you and your family because you all loved me for me. Goodbye, I hope our paths cross again someday but if not just know I’ll always love you Carson." was her last message to her family and to... him.

Chirp Chirp. The birds outside sang their hearts out

“Will you shut the hell up!” Carson yelled trying to fell back asleep.

However, the birds ignored him and continued to sing their merry song that seemed to welcome the sun.

“Alright I’m getting up geez! Man my head's killing me, my body too. What exactly happened last night?” Carson got out bed but as he did he felt sharp pains race through his body.

Deciding that the pain was just too much Carson decided to go downstairs and take some meds to help relieve the pain before heading out for the day. He walked into the kitchen where he saw on the table the bottles of Advil and Ibuprofen unopened and the tablets scattered about.

“Guess dad had a long night at the construction site.” Carson sorted the pills and then scraped them into their containers. After that he heard sobbing coming from the living room and ran over to see what’s going on.

In the living room sitting on the couch he saw his mom and his little brother both of them crying and holding each other tightly.

“Hey what’s going on?” He asked quickly walking over to them.

He didn’t get a reply but as he came closer he saw sitting across from them two police officers one of was holding his hat in his lap and the other just stared at the ground trying to fight the tears.

“By the time we pulled the car out of the lake, there was nothing we could do. Our team found high amounts of painkillers and alcohol in his system, so we believe that he already passed away before the car filled with water.” Officer Bolton said still holding his hat said.

“We also found him holding tightly to this photo. It was hard to make out who it was but after some time it became clear to me…” Officer Sid who had his head down moments ago reached into his pocket and pulled out a baggy with a photo in it and handed it to Carson’s mom.

Taking the bag, she examined it closely but couldn’t make out who was in the photo, Carson then walked over and hovered over her shoulder and unlike his mother he was able to make out who was in the photo.

“It’s a photo of Serena.” Carson and the officer said at the same time.

“Why would dad have a photo of Serena? He must’ve been wasted and grabbed it instead of one of mom’s photo.” Carson thought to himself.

Serena was a classmate of Carson’s and his best friend, they were always with one another that some people would mistake them as a couple. Serena often spent her time outside of school at Carson’s house where they treated her all like family… well except his father who hated Serena’s dad over some petty golf game from years ago but she knows that he doesn’t that to her. However, one day while walking home Carson said some things to Serena that he wished he could take back because just a few days after they fought Serena was found in her room with bloody cuts all over her right arm and a piece of paper in her left hand. It turned out that while cutting herself Serena had hit a major vein that ended with her bleeding to death. On the piece of paper, she wrote her last farewells to her family and to Carson,

Please know that I can’t take suffering anymore, mom and dad you both want me to be something I’m not and that’s not fair, I find myself forcing a smile whenever I’m around either one of you. And you’re right I might not be a likeable person but at least there’s one person who cares about me, even when he’s angry I know that the words he says to me are not from his heart. Carson please you must continue to live for the both of us now, I tried to strong for you and your family because you all loved me for me. Goodbye, I hope our paths cross again someday but if not just know I’ll always love you Carson.

The note was seen only by Serena’s family and the authorities, the parchment never made it to Carson’s eyes so for the last year and a half Carson has blamed himself over Serena’s death.

“There’s something written on the back and we believe it to be somewhat a suicide note he left behind.” Officer Sid said

Turning the bag over they saw the message left behind,

“I was a fool thinking I could live without you my love!”

“At…At least they’ll always be together now…” Carson’s mom spoke right before bursting into tears.

Then outside of the house the screeching of truck tires could be heard and then the slamming of a door.

“Honey what’s going on, why are the cops here? Are you okay?” Carson’s dad busted through the doors and rushed over to his family.

“Da.. Dad? But if you’re here then who are they talking about?”

Carson’s mom looked his dad in the eye trying to find the strength to talk.

“It’s…It’s Cars…” But she couldn’t finish her sentence and instead buried her face into his chest and wept.

“Mr. Donovan we got a call about a car that had plunged into the lake and when we pulled it out we found your son in the driver’s seat. We believe that he died before the car filled with water.” Officer Bolton explained.

“That’s nonsense, someone must have cut the breaks or something! My son would never kill himself.”

“I’m not dead I’m right here!” Carson shouted

“They can’t hear you.” A young female voice said

Carson turned around and saw Serena standing in the kitchen doorway. He ran over to her and hugged her.

“How… How are you here? I thought you were dead.”

“I am dead silly and so are you.” She said smiling

“But how? I don’t remember killing myself?”

“Just calm down, I remember I was the same way you were I couldn’t believe I was dead but there I was standing over my own body. Tell me when you opened your eyes did you feel any kind of pain?”

“Yeah my head and body ached but what does that have to do with me being dead?”

“Ah so that’s why you don’t remember the mixed pain killers you took must have wiped your memory.”

“Hey how do you know this?”
“Well I guess you could say I became your guardian angel though I guess just like my test I failed at that too otherwise you’d still be with them.” Serena tilted her head slightly to take a look over at Carson’s family who were all huddled together crying.

“Can you help me remember what happened?”

“Well I’m not too sure but I could give it a shot.” Serena put her hands on Carson’s cheeks and brought his head down and placed her forehead against his and closed her eyes.

“Since most of your memory is buried, I will show you what exactly happened through my eyes, now close your eyes.”

Doing what he was told Carson closed his eyes and though he couldn’t see he felt as though time itself had begun to move backwards.

“Alright now open your eyes.” Serena said letting go of Carson.

Opening his eyes Carson saw himself in his room pacing back and forth. He finally stopped in front of his desk and opened a drawer, pulling out a photo of Serena and a pen he turned the photo to the back and wrote on it. He then stuffed it into his pocket and left his bedroom and went downstairs.

Past Carson entered the kitchen and saw a note on the fridge;

Went to take Kyle to his wrestling match be back home around 10pm I left some money on the counter if you want to get yourself some pizza.

Love Mom

He then rummaged through the medicine cupboard and pulled out some Advil and ibuprofen and placed it on top of the table and then went into the fridge and pulled out a corona. He opened the beer and took a handful of painkillers and washed them down with the corona. He began choking and tried reaching for the vase of water in the center of the table knocking down the opened painkillers making them spill. After a minute he was finally able to swallow down the pills and breathe again.

“Son of bitch I wanted to kill myself painlessly and I end up choking myself instead.” He rubbed his neck and then grabbed the beer chugging it down and grabbing his keys that were hanging by the door.

“Did I really do that? What came over me I wonder?” Carson asked himself.

Memory Carson got into his car and took off, heading about eighty miles west where the grand oak lake was.

“You know, you’re a better driver drunk than you are sober.” Serena giggled at him.

Carson just rolled his eyes at her and ran to get into the car. Eventually they made it to the shore of the lake where the car stopped and Memory Carson got out of the car and walked over to the lake. "

” Hey Serena remember this place, it’s where we first meet back in summer camp all those years ago. You know I didn’t mean it when I said you were annoying and wished you would disappear. I was just having a really off day and took my anger out on you and for that I’m sorry. I tried to bury the guilt but I can’t anymore it hurts like hell without you by my side. So I decided to go to where you are and see that beautiful smile of yours. I love you Serena…” Carson could feel the painkillers kicking in as he felt himself slowly fading away. He got back in the car and started it up, he pulled out the photo of Serena and stomped on the gas, sending the car into the lake.

“Did you really mean all that? Or was that the alcohol talking?” Serena asked as they returned back inside the house.

“I did, my memory is coming back and strangely I feel at peace now.”

“Well then, shall we go?” Serena asked grabbing Carson’s hand.

“What do you mean? Go where?”

“Haha don’t worry about it, just know that this isn’t goodbye forever you can come visit them anytime you like!” She said as white feathery wings sprouted out of her back.

Carson just smiled as he held tightly to her hand, he turned to face his family one last time and instead of seeing them sad he saw them smiling and laughing as they remembered all the fun times they had with Carson.

“Goodbye mom and dad! Be good and take care of them for me Kyle! Love you all.” Carson turned to Serena and told her he was ready. The two walked off into a warm bright light.
