Trial and Error

Time to start! A chance to set myself apart from the rest. I will have to put my needs behind me for the next five hours. Put on the hats of a therapist, teacher, parent and social worker.

I will help them use pictures and signs to indicate what they need. If they can express themselves it will lessen the frustrations and tantrums. The assistants will look at me oddly and wonder why I am using painting in my class. There is no need to answer it is obvious to me. They will use their devices and point to colors they want while they design a piece of art.

We will use the dry erase boards and listen to stories. The assistants will talk under their breath and wonder how this is helping. It is obvious to me. We need to learn that our mistakes don’t have to be permanent and reading can be enjoyable.

We will use a timer to keep a schedule and remind us of our routine. The assistants will roll their eyes wondering how this will improve the situation. It is obvious to me. The students will know how far they have come and how much time is left until they can receive a choice.

There are few rights and wrongs with teaching- it is just trial and error. Thinking outside the box; because that is how they think.
