Neighborhood Gossip.

She doesn’t think I know what her games is, but, see, I heard her talking with my own ears. Keep away from her at Number 10, So right from the word go there won’t be any Good mornings coming my way from the new people in the neighborhood. Her and her poison, they’ll not be wanting anything to do with me.

Just because I’m old, ninety-one this year, and live all alone, it does not mean that I am deaf. In fact I’m sure I can hear as well as she can, that rumour-mongerer with her wagging tongue. She’s not the first to say it, I know that! She’s just regurgitating what someone else told her – Look out; there’s a witch about! Between them all they’ve made my life a very lonely one, making everyone too suspicious to take a chance on even talking to me.

And yet, what have I done? I’ve listened to their rowing and their arguments. I’ve heard plenty of things said that I’m sure she’d rather I hadn’t; but I’ve not gossiped about her and her own. I wouldn’t have done either, even if her and her like had not ruined my chances of making any sort of friend.

This time, though, she has taken it too far; saying these things almost right in front of me, just as if I was not even there.

I’ll gather them up, the herbs and the plants, the feathers to chop and the bones to grind. I’ll get out my book, the one my Grandma left me, make sure there’s nothing missing. Then I’ll be crushing and boiling and mixing up a curse.

When things start going badly for her she won’t really suspect me. She says I’m a witch, but really she does not have a clue how accurately her vicious tongue describes me.
