Third Drawer Down.

It wasn’t often that she found herself completely alone in the house, although most of the time it did not seem to make much difference. There was only one thing that she would not do if there was even the slightest possibility of someone walking in, catching her in the act. The need to do it had been getting stronger for the past few weeks, becoming almost unbearable to resist. But resist it she had and now, finally, she had her chance.

She walked in to the bedroom. Even though she knew there was no one there to hear, she tried to move silently, to not make a sound. The third drawer down slid open easily and she let her hand drift through the silks and satins, searching with her fingertips for that cold steel.

There! Her fingers brushed against it, not yet able to get a grip. She would have to reach in that bit further, stretch her arm....and at last her fingers closed around it. She pulled it from her drawer, set it on her bedside table and made herself comfortable. This was something she had no desire to rush through.

She took the gun in her hand, flipped open the chamber, and there it was.....still there. Still safe. One single bullet that was her emergency escape route. No need to use it now; it was enough to know it was sitting there, safe inside that drawer.

She glanced quickly towards the clock. Any second now someone could come home. Her need satisfied, she slid the gun back into its hiding place, arranged the silks and satins and silently pushed the drawer closed.

Back downstairs, busy with her chores, she could at least feel at peace for a while.
