I didn't base this poem on any specific battle, and nor did I have any inspiration to write it. It just happened. I hope you enjoy.

Guns on the prairie.

For 4 years, a bloody conflict ensued.

A conflict to fell many men.

More than 620 thousand soldiers.

Who would all do it again.

The field; now a graveyard.

The men that once stood upon it

Now lost within.

Underneath the ground, and the guns.

Passers-by look in awe.

At the ground ahead.

Upon which was a brutal fight,

And below which are the dead

The field knows only a silence,

Not like that seen in the war.

And the tight ranks of grass

Hold the fallen under the floor.

A floor which upon sits the guns

Over 150 years silent.

Watching as life goes on, like life used to,

But no longer does for those under the ground.

But their spirits at their positions still stand,

Like the guns stand on the hills

Those guns, that roared over the prairie

The prairie where those men were killed.
