Scarcely we’d begun

When I knew we would be

Great friends and companions

While here in my dream.

I followed, you listened

And out we would go.

Over the mountains,

Deep through the snow.

Calloused and blistered

We still journeyed on,

Keeping a watch

For a place we’d belong.

At last the path split,

And I took one way.

You shook your head,

While I cried in dismay!

Lost to despair,

I begged you to stop.

Your path looked so dangerous,

Yet still you went on.

I turned to walk lonely

The rest of the way

Your footsteps fade slowly,

As you walk to your grave.
