You never wanted me, not really, not ever

Only who you thought I was, only who you felt I should be—someone better than the both of us

I didn’t really mind at first, so long as you remembered my name

So long as you looked at me only, disregarding my flaws and my shame

I wondered at times what you saw, instead of what really was there

I wondered if caught in your eyes, I was something more precious, more rare

You’ve always been quick to presume, your judgments unerringly right

Whatever the world may call black, you’ll say most assuredly is white

Contrary to good common sense, you ride your horse straight through the fence

You let nothing alter your way, and believe every word that you say

You never wanted me, not really, not as I truly am

But so long as you’ll stay by my side, I can’t say your love is a sham
