This story is about a character I created for a Dungeons and Dragons game. I'd become way too obsessed with his backstory and decided to spend far too many hours writing journal entries for him, in
the vain hope that the other players will read them one day, and understand why he is the way he is. My Gamemaster suggested that I stop writing journal entries and instead try to focus on stories.

When I realized that I have enough to constitute a novel, I decided to try publishing bits here, in hopes that I'll get some feedback.

The story itself is heavily influenced by the rules of a DnD game. I try not to quote stats in my writing, but everything that happens is checked against the rules (of one edition or another) to
make sure it could have happened as written. I may rename a spell, or play around with how it works, for dramatic effect, but for the most part, I reference a game manual frequently as I write.

The story is set in the Greyhawk campaign setting (which is owned by Wizards of the Coast) in the Lortmil Mountains. The prologue contains a brief description of the main character, Oskar Balderk.
The following chapters will be interesting stories from his life, which will be incorporated into the main storyline eventually.

Journal Entry Year 570: The Cave

Submitted: July 25, 2017

The party had been adventuring together for a few years by now. They were noticed early on by the Prince of Ulek, and have been pulled into political matters multiple times. This event takes place while they're on the way home after yelling at some secessionist dwarves Prince Olinstad wanted the party to reprimand.

The three had followed some odd tracks into a cave deep in the forest and were surprised by a Minotaur. Battle ensued, of course. Unfortunately, Oskar was a little bit off target with a rather explosive spell and managed to bring the cave down on himself. Read Chapter

Oskar was trained by an elven sorcerer, Amnestria's father. At this point in the story, Oskar and Marent had both admitted that they felt something special for each other, and shared a few special moments together. Unfortunately, due to dwarven custom, neither had made any attempt to take things further.

Amnestria is very frustrated with both of them. This takes place in the year 572. Read Chapter

Flowers in the Dark

Dwarves have an ability called Darkvision - they can essentially see in full dark. Elves have low-light vision, and can see twice as far as a human in poorly lighted areas. Humans, however, function just like humans in real life.

In other stories yet to be published, it's revealed that Oskar is afraid of the dark, due to that unfortunate incident involving a minotaur, a cave in, and 36 hours alone in the dark. Read Chapter

Journal 579: Wedding

Submitted: July 25, 2017

In the original journal, which was written solely as a game prop never meant to be published, I included a poem at the beginning of this entry. It was meant to have been written by Oskar as a private wedding gift for Marent.

If you read some of the poetry I've written, you'll see that writing my own romantic poem to go here would be a terrible idea. As a result, I took a poem from Catullus that I've loved for years, rewrote it to fit, and put it in there. However, I don't want to publish something someone else had written, passing it off as Oskar's own creation, so I'll just leave that part out. Imagine that he wrote a beautiful poem about living for each other, not wasting the short time that they have together.

It brings tears to your eyes. You love it. Read Chapter

Year 582. The party has been working towards their goal of finding the Axe of the Dwarvish Lords for years now, but things are heating up with their neighbors: The orcish country of Pomarj.

Marent has joined with a group called The Hammers of Moridan, and has become a Knight Errent of their order, sworn to eliminate all enemies of Moridan from the Flaness, specifically, orcs.

The group spends more time fighting in the ongoing war against Pomarj than they do searching for the Axe. This next bit takes place in the year 582, after the party has become well known by the united armies of Ulek for their contributions to the war effort. Read Chapter
