Knowing that she was intently staring at the television, as usual, I took a moment to compose myself and to wipe the cold sweat from my trembling brow. Turning to face her bed I lost my nerve and couldn’t speak; after a few moments, taking notice of my awkward silence, she lifted an eyebrow inquisitively without turning her head. Now or never buddy. I cleared my throat, coughed, and almost started to wretch.

Calmly extending a hand to the ever-present remote resting on her blanket draped legs the TV fell silent even as her eyes continued to follow the captions scrolling up onto the reporters neatly pressed slacks. “Err Connie…” I faltered momentarily, but quickly regained my composure, “I’ve been meaning to…”

“I forgave you a long time ago.”

Just like that the damn broke and my palms became sweaty just as I began to weep. What started as inconspicuous tears trailing down my face quickly evolved into shoulder pumping sobs of relief. To her credit Connie simply unmuted the news report and pretended not to notice; thus preventing me from resorting to turning my back on her or, more embarrassingly, having to beat a retreat into the crowded hospital hallway.
