It seemed as I was only a shadow laid onto the ground by the golden enemy, its rays piercing my eyes, the clothes I wore melted onto my back, yet any sweat that formed quickly dissolved.

The sand would rush past my bare feet as it was dragged through the air, unable to follow its own path, burying my feet deeper into the scorching sand, my eyes overlooking every detail around me, searching for more than just the endless dunes that surrounded me.

My backpack falls to the ground as I collapse beside it, covering my mouth with the snow white sleave of my t-shirt in an attempt to keep out the sand. I unzip the pack, inspecting its content, hoping the rations would last another day, or at least until my work was through.

Hauling my backpack over my shoulder, I once again continue my expedition, with every step draining me of more and more stamina. I just hoped I would get this over with before it’s too late. The constant breeze pushing against my face, trying to force me back to where I belonged, but I pushed my way through the sandstorm, I would not allow it to control me.

My movement halts, my hand reaching into my jacket. Perhaps not the best choice of clothing for this journey. My hand moved over the steel hilt of the sword that remained hidden under my clothing, my eyes closing slowly. My senses enhancing dramatically. The roaring sound of the wind and sand cutting past my ear, the feeling of it pushing me backwards, and then, something else, the footsteps marking the dunes behind me, his efforts to fight against the storm as he pushed forwards, closer, closer, soon the figure was a mere few feet away from me, and then his footsteps drifted away in the wind.

The sound of steel striking steel rushes through my ears, as my eyes finally open, my deep brown eyes shooting through the figure that stood, his gaze fixed on me, his hand shaking from the force of the swords collision, our blades connected before being pulled apart as he’s flung backwards rolling across the sand, but it wasn’t long before he struggled to his feet.

“I cannot allow you to find it,” the man’s voice fought against the wind, only just managing to reach me.

I was silent, watching him with an iron gaze, the grip on my sword tightening. He wouldn’t last long. The man attempts to lunge at me, despite the wind trying to force him back, yet he managed to draw closer, his weapon raised as he struck. He would not see victory.

The tip of his sword an inch from my face, the blood that escaped from the wound in his chest already dried to his clothes. He staggers backwards, collapsing onto the ground, the sword he held falling from his hand, the blade burying itself in the sand that drifted over it from the storm.

“Please,” he croaks, blood making its way through his lips. “Who are you?” He finished gasping for air and his eyes widened as he watched me.

“Call me Ekros. Ekros Heart."
